Sierra Vista override a ‘bargain’ at $11 a month

Published/Last Modified on Saturday, Oct 11, 2008 - 12:38:48 am MST

To the Editor:

I went to Bisbee and voted early for the school bond override. I am retired and pay real estate taxes. I have no kids and no relatives in Sierra Vista schools, but someday maybe I can look down from heaven or a happy hunting ground and see what a bargain I got for just $11 a month.

" I don't know what you are calling a shack. Those numbers are based upon a house with an assessed value of 200K. The average assessed home value is 174K. Assessed values are approximately 75% of what you could sell your home for.
The money raised by the override funds the 56 positions (and some class supplies) that it is raised for. That $4.90 going to "other" is simply not true. "

God Bless you Kenneth. I wish you could speak some sense into these people who do not care about the youth of their own community. "

" I understand your frustration with the apparent lack of accountability of the School District. I also feel your pain about higher taxes and cost of living. And I believe that there needs to be some oversight as to how the override moneys are used. But think for a moment of the affect on the children. If the override does NOT pass, our STUDENTS are the ones who are left without valuable arts and humaities classes, counselors and librarians. If your child were hungry you would find a way to feed him, cost aside. Feed the children's minds, whatever it takes. It's important. "

" This voter displays how little he knows on the subject, yet he voted for it. Even wasted resources to do it. First off, it is not a bond, it is a direct tax, no bonds are issued. If his wasteful actions are a reflection of others for the override, then we can see why there is so much waste in the school district. VOTING NO! "

" This LTE just does not ring true. A retired man living on a fixed income drives all the way to Bisbee to vote early with the high price of gas and look the unnecessary gas burned and all the green house gases released. Just a terrible waste of our precious resources. Early ballots and the US mail would have been the effective way. The real deal here is this letter is a plant by the vote “yes” people just not believable. Yes I am a no voter taxes are high enough. VOTE NO OVERRIDE "

" Only people who dont care about their finances would vote for yet ANOTHER override. I voted NO because at some point this school district has to be held accountable for the way they spend money. This district thinks if you throw money at a problem it will automatically fix it. VOTE NO everyone! "

" Not sure which override you voted for, but if it was Sierra Vista, $4.90 of the "$11" will not go to the classroom. Its even worse if you voted for the override in Tombstone. There, less than half of the $11 will go to the classroom. Neither sounds like a good use of my money. "
