BISBEE — If tonight’s homecoming game at Benson High isn’t to determine the 2A East Region title, it will at the very least determine which team has the inside track coming down the stretch.
Last week, Bisbee and Benson opened region play with convincing wins — Bisbee beating Morenci 32-12 at home and Benson routing Thatcher 34-6.
Benson, at 5-1 overall at 1-0 in region, is led by tailback Kyle Graf, who already has a whopping 1,043 yards on the ground on 113 carries.
Bisbee head coach Truman Williamson knows the key to stopping Benson starts with slowing Graf.

“We have a lot of plans. We know a little more about them than we have in the past,” Williamson said. “We’re going to put more pressure on them. They’ve been trying to throw more out of play-action but their quarterback’s still only completing 30 percent of his passes.”
The Pumas will be without Cesar Alcala, who was key to the defensive effort in last week’s win that sacked Morenci quarterbacks 14 times.
Alcala was ejected from that game and per Arizona Interscholastic Association rules, must sit out one game.
Williamson said the Pumas will also be without sophomore Diego Durazo, but otherwise have a clean bill of health.
“I think we’ve had very good practices all week,” Williamson said. “We’re going to set up something entirely different from the things they’ve faced in the last three years.”
Williamson said on defense, he’s moving Dustin Cardenas from safety to linebacker and putting 6-foot-3 Thor Acuna into the secondary to try to stop fade patterns which have hurt Bisbee all season.
Williamson said that of all the teams they played in summer passing leagues, Benson was the poorest passing team of them all.
