The Sierra Vista Community Chorus, recipients of the 2007 Mayor’s Arts Award for organization of the year, presents their fifth annual gospel concert. The chorus is under the direction of Sharon Keene.
This concert opens the 2008-2009 concert season for the chorus and will be presented on Friday at 7 p.m. and on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Faith Presbyterian Church, 2053 E. Choctaw Drive, in Sierra Vista.
The gospel concert’s program is not only inspirational in its music, but in its gift to charity. Although this concert is free of charge, traditionally, a free will offering is accepted at the concerts and donated to a charity. This year CANTER, which stands for Cochise Area Network of Therapeutic Equestrian Resources, will be the recipient of all monies collected.
CANTER conducts regular therapeutic horse riding sessions for individuals with disabilities which include mental and physical challenges, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, autism, vision and hearing impairment and others. It promotes health and independence for individuals with disabilities from ages 3 to 66 using therapeutic horse riding. It is a nonprofit and community supported organization. Without its volunteers and aid from the community CANTER could not exist.

Pat Wick of the Sierra Vista Herald had this to say about this wonderful organization. “CANTER is an ‘I can’ experience. We know there is more to every experience than just physical sensations. Riding helps develop and expand the sense of self-awareness, self-confidence, self-esteem and self-discipline,== and improves concentration. And the special bond built between horse and rider provides an incentive for achievements never thought possible.”
CANTER also aspires to serve our military veterans. One of their goals is to make their services available to those veterans in need of their therapeutic techniques.
A variety of gospel songs will be presented by the chorus and ensembles. Some are tender and heart warming and some songs will make you want to shout, “Hallelujah!”
The chorus hopes everyone will be able to attend their gospel concert on either Friday or Saturday as they share their joy of inspiring gospel music.
