SIERRA VISTA — Wal-Mart’s preliminary plat will be up for public hearing and vote tonight at the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Since purchasing about 54 acres of state land at an auction, Wal-Mart has planned a Supercenter, Sam’s Club and gas station at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and the Highway 90 Bypass.

A 3.9-acre outer lots planned for smaller retail stores or restaurants are also planned to be built by other developers.

The existing traffic light on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway across from Lowe’s will provide a major access point into the center. Another will be at Campus Drive and Highway 90, where a traffic signal will be added.

Another traffic signal is planned on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway at Avenida Escuela, which will extend behind the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club by the company.

The supercenter is planned to be about 195,000 square feet and the Sam’s Club will be about 135,000 square feet, situated to the east of Avenida Escuela.

A parking lot with about 1,568 spaces will take up most of the site.

Wal-Mart stores’ architectural building plans are under review by city staff.

The commission will also consider a street name change affecting four houses on Piccadilly Drive. The proposed change would rename Piccadilly Drive to Piccadilly Lane.

Tonight members of the Commission on Disability Issues will present “Visitability,” a film about ADA regulations, for a work session with the Planning and Zoning Commission following their regular meeting.

Creating wider door requirements and street level access are some of the ideas addressed in the film, said Councilman Tom Reardon.

The Sierra Vista Planning and Zoning Commission meeting will be at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 1011 N. Coronado Drive.

" It would be nice to have a Supercenter Walmart in Sierra Vista. Having something in town to shop food, clothing, and other goods will be great for a change. It does wonders for military families that can't leave the area. Sometimes it is very time consuming to drive to Tucson just to get everything you need especially when preparing for deployment. Military families go from place to place every 2 to 3 years and see communities grow. It would be nice to see this community catch up to others. A Hollywood Connection, family fun center, would be great here. "

" I hope the Herald does an article on the average wages of the Chinese workers vs. American paid jobs for Made in the U.S.A. products Sam Walton is turning in his grave!I have not been to many "clean" retail stores in Sierra Vista or seen any clean shopping carts. It costs money for a good cleaning crew dedicated to the employeers. "

" It is going to be bigger than the Benson store. Knock Walmart? Where can you buy strictly American made products? Some want it built in their area yet if it was, the NIMBY'S would be out in full force. Myself, I can't wait to see the local grocers get some competition. They are the stores I hate the most, with all their inferior store brand name products, and the high cost of everything. A person can drive to Tucson, have lunch, buy supplies and groceries, and be money ahead. "

" How wonderful it would be if they were required to sell only "Made in America" products and to pay a living wage for long term employees. After all we have more then enough lead infested cheap stuff from China already! "

Yet you still go there, oh the agony!! "

" The P&Z commission and the City council will do anything and everything possible to accomodate this big box monstrosity. Why do they even bother with the charade of meetings and hearings. Our local govt. will give them everything and anything they want.
I know plenty will welcome Walmart and its society killing tactics. Make way for "progress". "

We will probably end up with another Chinese Food restaurant instead of Red Lobster. "

" maybe Wal Mart will bring a Trader Joe's to town. wouldn't that be nice. Or a Sweet Tomatoes would be nice also.Or Kohl's clothing store.
No more dollar stores please. I have been hearing about how Wal Mart was coming to town since I moved here in 1999 so will believe when I see it. And hope it is much bigger than Douglas or Bensen stores are. We need more selection not another store like Home Depot or Lowes that do not offer half what thier counterparts in Tucson do. "
