SIERRA VISTA — Wal-Mart’s preliminary plat will be up for public hearing and vote tonight at the Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.
Since purchasing about 54 acres of state land at an auction, Wal-Mart has planned a Supercenter, Sam’s Club and gas station at the northwest corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway and the Highway 90 Bypass.
A 3.9-acre outer lots planned for smaller retail stores or restaurants are also planned to be built by other developers.
The existing traffic light on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway across from Lowe’s will provide a major access point into the center. Another will be at Campus Drive and Highway 90, where a traffic signal will be added.

Another traffic signal is planned on Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway at Avenida Escuela, which will extend behind the Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club by the company.
The supercenter is planned to be about 195,000 square feet and the Sam’s Club will be about 135,000 square feet, situated to the east of Avenida Escuela.
A parking lot with about 1,568 spaces will take up most of the site.
Wal-Mart stores’ architectural building plans are under review by city staff.
The commission will also consider a street name change affecting four houses on Piccadilly Drive. The proposed change would rename Piccadilly Drive to Piccadilly Lane.
Tonight members of the Commission on Disability Issues will present “Visitability,” a film about ADA regulations, for a work session with the Planning and Zoning Commission following their regular meeting.
Creating wider door requirements and street level access are some of the ideas addressed in the film, said Councilman Tom Reardon.
The Sierra Vista Planning and Zoning Commission meeting will be at 7 p.m. in Council Chambers at City Hall, 1011 N. Coronado Drive.
