A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, in the St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church in Sierra Vista, Ariz., for Sophie Vedeika, 98.

Sophie was a 10-year resident of Sierra Vista, and passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Hidden Garden Assisted Living Home after living there for the past three years.

She was born Oct.18, 1909 in Gatchina, Russia. She and the family moved to Lithuania in 1917. It was there that she met and married Thomas Dambrauskas, and in 1933 a son, Vincent, was born.


In 1943, as the Russians were advancing toward Lithuania, they fled to Germany. At the conclusion of World War II, they moved into a displaced persons camp established by UNRA. They stayed there unit they were allowed to immigrate to the United States in 1950.

The family settled in Detroit, Mich. Sophie went to work for the J.L. Hudson Department Store. In 1951, she and Thomas divorced. She continued to work for the company advancing to the accounting department. She remained with J.L. Hudson until her retirement in 1974.

Sophie then moved to Florida to enjoy her retirement. She loved playing bridge with friends and doing needlepoint. While there she married Peter Vedeika, whom she had known for many years. After he passed away, she moved to Virginia in 1988 to live with her son, Vincent, and his wife, Milda. In 1998 they all moved to Sierra Vista. She continued to play bridge with friends and neighbors and enjoy her new home.

Survivors not only include her son and his wife, but a grandson, Peter, and his daughter, Emily, of Benson, Ariz.; a granddaughter, Donna Mazer, and her husband, Steve, and their daughters, Morgan and Lindsey, of Glenwood, Md. Other surviving grandchildren are Sofia Dalzell of Superior, Colo.; Paul and his wife, Billie, and their daughter, Allison, all of North Pole, Alaska.

Assisting the family is Hatfield Funeral Home.
