Sept. 18

Treadmills and global warming. Any connection? Not while there might be someone out there who recognizes you, huh? Or maybe just another sleazy pick-up joint? But for the rest of us? “Breathe deep the gathering gloom.”

Yesterday I noticed in Wednesday’s On Your Mind column that the published comments concerning Obama and McCain were quite out of balance. I believe the count was eight against McCain and three for him, although those three were lukewarm, at best. Believe I’ll keep tracking the numbers to see if the Herald/Review can become a little more “fair and balanced” in their political reporting.

Editor’s note: On Your Mind is a comment line and reflects the views of readers who send in comments or call in comment. It is not political reporting.

Exploiting fear among the American people that easily can turn into panic in the current economic crisis on Wall Street, as Barack Obama is doing, is more a sign of demagoguery and hardly one of presidential leadership. Obama doesn’t win my confidence as someone who can lead the nation in future crises.

Now that the governor of Kansas has expressed her opinion, I suppose that race has become an issue in this election. It may well become the major factor when Biden is bought out and replaced by Clinton.

I sense panic among Democrats after reading the OYMs bashing McCain-Palin in the Sept. 17 Herald. Has this dynamic woman governor from Alaska pinched a raw liberal nerve? With an incredible approval rating of more than 80 percent among Alaskans, she brings the experience of a woman who has governed a state and administered a multibillion budget. She can claim accomplishments of taking on a corrupt political establishment and standing up to the oil industry. She is one gutsy woman! In comparison, Barack Obama can claim only his eloquent scripted speeches, filled with his dreamy promises of nebulous change. Sarah Palin is a seasoned fighter. She has fought and worked hard for the welfare and good of Alaskans. I believe she will do the same for the nation. I’ll gladly take my chances with Palin as John McCain’s V.P., before I take a chance with a still unknown, unproven, and inexperienced Barack Obama as my president.

It is disingenuous how Obama supporters feign indignance about the way people, specifically Sarah Palin, speak about “community organizers.” What does a community organizer do anyway? Who do they answer to? What’s their mission statement? Nobody can answer this because it’s a very vague term. Any of us could put community organizer on our resume and there would no way to verify whether or not we were a community organizer or what we accomplished. What did Obama accomplish as a community organizer? Obama supporters conveniently forget how they continuously mocked Palin, when she was first announced as VP candidate, for being just a “small town mayor”. Interestingly, the very first response the Obama camp had about her nomination is that she was just the mayor of a small town. Until that point nobody said anything about Obama’s “community organizing”. Obama supporters: Don’t throw stones in glass houses.

We need to thank our soldiers every day. If you see a soldier thank him/her. They’re protecting our country. They’re missing their kids growing up, holidays, sleeping in regular beds, eating regular meals. They’re doing this for our country. Vietnam was a political war. We don’t want this to be a war over oil. My husband got his disability yesterday, 23 percent. This man can never walk again in his life, he cannot work, and he can barely do anything. So please think of what your future is and get the right people in there to help us. I’m an everyday person, but please help.

The public is asking about McCain/Palin, that they’re too old and not enough experience. To me when you hire somebody you usually hire him for their education and what they’ve accomplished. What has Obama accomplished? McCain has been in the service; he knows what it’s like to fight in war. I think we all need to get together on this. I worry about the gas prices and the food prices. If you don’t have any money the way prices are right now and everything is getting smaller. Our country has many things that need to be addressed.

W canceled a campaign trip today “to work on the economy.” That terrifies me coming from a guy who talked “fuzzy math” in 2000. Forget for a moment about endless wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our very own Herbert Hoover II has nearly doubled the national debt and created budget deficits as far as the eye can see. Supply side economics was a joke back to Ronald Reagan, but Bush carved “borrow and spend” in solid Republican granite then inlaid it with gold and platinum borrowed from China. We now pay $230 billion in interest on the national debt but this figure will go much, much higher as the U.S. dollar continues to go down a “black hole” spiral. Months ago a caller said we should wait 25 years for Bush’s history. Well, I sit each day as Wall Street crashes and burns and my 30 years of careful investing go up in smoke.

I noticed the Herald is publishing every letter to the editor it receives that attacks McCain or Palin. The panic evidenced in these letters by staunch liberal fanatics such as Beckers and Glazerman is obviously shared by the editor Phil Vega. Mr. Vega publishes a newspaper in a conservative military community. Too bad he doesn’t realize that fact and attempt to publish a more fair and balanced newspaper. Instead he apparently intends to print every letter submitted to him by the Cochise County Democratic Party members. I think the community is smarter than Mr. Vega gives it credit for.

Editor’s note: Phil Vega is publisher of the Herald/Review. And we are running many political letters and have run them for and against each of the presidential candidates.

I see that the Sierra Vista animal shelter is asking you to adopt a pet and it’s also on TV. I have a middle class income and I’ve adopted five animals from there. I can’t afford to adopt anymore because the government won’t give you any kind of tax credit for the vet bills that incur. It’s not like adopting a child; you get no credit. Vets are very expensive; the shots, if they need an operation, if they break a leg and you have to have it repaired, etc. If you have some type of tax credit for the vet bills because they are so expensive more people would probably adopt a pet. You need plenty of money to afford a pet. Maybe the state can give you a tax credit for adopting a pet.

I read in today’s newspaper where someone listed 10 reasons not to vote for Sarah Palin. That was very political and one-sided. Any of those 10 reasons wouldn’t disqualify anyone from running for anything.

There are always a lot of funny comments and stories in the Herald. But the bold quote by David Steven, Republican District 25 candidate for the Arizona House of Representative, has to move up to the No. 1 slot. The League of Women Voters held a District 25 candidate forum on Sept. 17. Stevens did not show up. However, a statement from him was read on his behalf that said, “I’m running for your state representative because I don’t feel we’ve had the representation we deserve.” This from a guy who is working in Kuwait. Now that’s the representation we deserve. Ha, ha, ha.

This is in reference to a comment Palin made about Joe Biden stating it’s patriotic to pay taxes. I find this elementary and not so bright by her. For generations the rich and infamous have stolen so much from the middle class, from people on Social Security and Medicare, and from veterans. So many corporations have exploited hundreds of billions of dollars from taxpayers. Yet they have taken their offices overseas where they have beat the system on paying taxes, like Halliburton and others. Our own government doles out hundreds of billions of dollars to them while they run around the world cruising with their megamillion dollar yachts not paying taxes. Palin should get her record straight and look with a straight eye.

I bet if someone put Hillary’s private e-mails on the Internet, there would be you know what to pay. Democrats are nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.

Sarah Palin, life member of the National Rifle Association. She’s got my vote and that guy that’s running with her.

It’s ironic we send billions of dollars to foreign nations many of which want to destroy our way of life and by the same token our federal government gives companies that go bankrupt billions but we can not allocate a few billion dollars for a very well-regimented health care system that would be beneficial to the pharmaceutical companies, the doctors, and the entire medical community and for the welfare of the American public. By the same token they could appropriate a few billion dollars for our own infrastructure. The government does all these charities for other people but we don’t do it for our own people and nation. That is a shame and a disgrace, especially now in the Gulf region.

Sept. 19

A quick response to the Sept. 19 letter, “Consider this bad political movie plot,” especially the line, “And if ‘President McCain’ were to be incapacitated during this crisis (with Russia), the fate of our republic would be in the hands of a self-described ‘hockey mom’.” Don’t you mean the “hockey mom” who is the governor of a state with an approval rating of over 80 percent, having cleaned up the corrupt political establishment and running a state energy program that is the envy of the nation. So I take it the author would have the rock star, our liberal media-creation, who stumbles on his next word without his teleprompter, dealing with a Russian crisis. Now that “Sounds like a really bad movie plot, doesn’t it?”

Blatant lie equals “outright falsehood, lie told brazenly.” Pretty much what McCain did in his ad attacking Obama. In essence, Obama supported “age appropriate” sex-education for children as a means of teaching them what was proper or improper touching, as well as to protect them against pedophiles. Used in the context of the McCain campaign ad, however, Obama’s stance becomes another one of those cultural “wedge” issues that seems designed to alienate the Illinois Democrat from more socially moderate voters. If McCain’s attack hadn’t been so public and so brazen you might call it a simple twisting of the truth. Look we got the same kind of trash from Bush II. He and his followers published lies about Gore, Clilnton, and Kerry; not to mention the war in Iraq. Pretty soon the American people are going to figure it out. I don’t care what you say, lying is immoral. The truth always wins.

I’m calling about the Oktoberfest at Veterans’ (Memorial) Park. For the last two or three years that we’ve gone to the Oktoberfest we have not heard any German music at all. This time it was only big band music and a rock band. This is ridiculous when people are expecting to hear German music. This music just doesn’t go with the theme and is disappointing to many people.

I’m extremely upset as are other people I’m sure with the billion-dollar bailout the government is giving these big companies. Several hundreds or thousands of people have lost their homes and I don’t see the government stepping in to help them. That is just not right or fair. Something needs to be done about it.

There were 39 combat-related killings in Iraq in January. In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in January. That’s just one American city that’s about as deadly as the entire war-torn country of Iraq. When someone claims Bush shouldn’t have started this war tell him the following: FDR, Democrat, led us into World War II. Germany never invaded us. Truman, Democrat, finished that war and started one in Korea. North Korea never attacked us. JFK, Democrat, started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us. And Johnson, Democrat, turned Vietnam into a quagmire.

Here we go with another knucklehead statement by a politician, Senator Biden. If you don’t pay taxes I guess you’re unpatriotic. Well, I don’t pay taxes; I’m on Social Security. I’m probably like millions of other people. Does that make us unpatriotic? Every time politicians open their mouths they put their foot in. What is it, something in the water? Is it the election season that makes them make asinine statements? I don’t know but I’m about ready to give up.

Any registered voter can be placed on the permanent early voting list whereby they will automatically receive an early ballot by mail and never again have to request one. Provide your name, mailing address, and signature to: Cochise County Recorder, 1415 Melody Lane, Building B, Bisbee AZ 85603 and ask to be put on the list.

I just finished reading the OYM comment today from the divinity doctorate that can’t understand anything in Jim Adam’s police department article. Maybe this guy is at such an intellectual level that he can’t understand us common folk. I’m a retired police lieutenant also, the same as Adams, an active lieutenant. I remember in my freshman year at the university I had a psychology professor who was so far above all the students in his class that he failed everyone except one straight A student who got a D-minus. Adam’s articles are excellent. As a retired officer, I can understand everything he says. He is a wonderful representative of the excellent police department here in Sierra Vista. They are understaffed and overworked, and we all should be supporting them not knocking them.

I was just talking to a good friend of mine who is a small business owner. He was saying times have been so bad he wasn’t making any money and he was broke. He said he would rob a bank but there wasn’t any money in the banks anymore. That’s getting it about right. Barack Obama will straighten is all out. He’ll make it all better.

I’m writing in response to the comment about the child abduction story being buried in the back of the newspaper. The caller needs to realize that developers and Realtors run this town and crime does not sell houses. That includes the newspaper. They also run the newspaper.

John McCain speaking in factories to workers telling them how he supports the labor force is a joke. The Republican Party always puts down the working man, supports big business, and does anything to break unions. They don’t support the working man. They support the employers, big business, and people who put the working man down.

Here are two important points to ponder. 1. Barack Obama introduced Senate Bill 2280 his first year in office. It proposed measure to curb abuses in mortgage lending. He saw then what was coming. The bill did not pass. 2. John McCain says he will privatize Social Security. That is, put your accounts in the stock market. Wow!

Harvard economist say what most American's already have been saying: Bankruptcy rather than bail out is the right choice.

" No it proved me right. The President wanted this bailout, The Democrats were willing to go along, but only if the Republicans got 100 votes so that they could not blame the $700 Billion on the Democrats. That's what happened, if the Republicans backed thier own President and took responsibility for the Bailout they would have it. "

" The Herald asks for 'thoughtful contributions' to OYM, not the too often EMOTIONAL spewing that some people believe passes for 'thinking'... and like another commentor, I also read with amazement how so many people are ignorant of the facts. Of course, being anonymous they don't wind up embarrassing themselves. I agree with him that it is worrisome that these folks vote. It could be interesting for them to spend a little time and read what the opposition has to say and do a little investigation to ferret out the truth. "

Oil came way down, I guess that's why Bush was crying how much we needed this phoney bailout "

" Obama nor McCain will straighten out our Country. However, I believe the American people will. Stay focused, keep working, buy American products. . My idea is for the Government to pay people who live in the devastated areas from the floods. Sign up for work and you get paid. It is your neighborhood. This will make you proud to help your friends and improve your neighborhood as well. Something like the WPA from years ago. "

" Looks like Pelosi has egg on her face. She started up with her blame/hate rhetoric and it backfired. She wasn't able to get the Republicans to back the bail out bill. Looks like the only ones who own this bill are Pelosi, the Dems and President Bush. Too bad, so sad. "

" Well Mr. Dent, I believe today's events have proven you wrong. There are more Republicans (and even some Democrats) sticking to their guns on this than you thought. Pelosi should have kept her mouth shut instead of showboating and politicizing. I'm glad McCain rallied the conservatives to have a say in this. He is the real leader in all this. Much better than Obama only looking for his next political opportunity to further his own career and self interest. "

Btw, Real Estate Agents cannot tell you that a neighborhood is good or bad. Even if they could you think this only happens in certain neighborhoods? Just because one school area is targeted doesn't mean yours will never be next. Sickos don't keep a preference.... "

Tax breaks for pets wrote on Sep 29, 2008 7:35 AM:

" Nice idea. The reason it won't work is because there's no regulation on raising/caring for pets, there barely is for children. You probably have yours because you want them, like some parents want their kids. But like thousands (millions?) of people who have/adopt kids just for the money, there would be people who adopt hordes of animals for the tax break, then neglect them (or worse). There's little enough can or will be done about people who do this to children, can you imagine how bad it would be for animals? "
