The Huachuca Art Association presents the 37th Annual Art in the Park, this Oct 4 and 5 in Veterans’ Memorial Park in Sierra Vista.
Artisans and crafters from all over the United States will come here to display and sell their work, having been juried in by a group of jurors from the art association. They are selected for originality and quality.
It has grown to 240 booths over the years, filling our ark. The festival has earned a four-star rating in “Sunshine Artist’s Magazine” in both vender and customer satisfaction.
Art in the Park started with 10 vendors, outdoors, with very few tents, displaying their artwork on racks, out in the hot sun.

Before the Art in the Park weekend the mayor of Sierra Vista issued a “Proclamation” in the public notices in the paper. Sierra Vista Herald: “Now Therefore, I, Ethel Berger, Mayor of the City of Sierra Vista, Arizona, do hereby proclaim Sept 16, 1974 through Sept. 22, 1974, as ‘Art in the Park Week’.”
Dale Boatman was the first president of the Huachuca Art Association. He was an artist in the Army and along with other artists in the city, founded the HAA in 1969.
Boatman taught art here in the Thunder Mountain Inn for many years. The Huachuca Art Association Gallery and Studio at 3818 Astro St., in Hereford has been endowed with the Boatman Library. More than 400 books on art and artists are there and these are available to the members of the art association.
This year Art in the Park will be open Oct. 4 Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Oct. 5, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
While browsing through the vendor booths at Art in the Park, visitors are going to have more to look at this year than in past years’ events.
The two-day event is one of the finest art fairs in the Southwest, attracting artists from all over Arizona and other western states, including California, New Mexico and Colorado.
Art in the Park offers the perfect venue for holiday shopping and unique items for the home. Displays include original artwork, furniture, jewelry, clothing, sculptures, seasonal items, pottery, ceramics, leather goods, stained glass, textiles, folk art, baskets and much more.
As the Huachuca Art Association’s primary fundraiser, money is used for the association’s gallery and to support local artists. With more than 300 members, the Huachuca Art Association accepts all artists and all media.
The association’s gallery, located at 3818 Astro St. in Hereford, is open Thursday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
To get there, take Highway 92 south to mile marker 328, just south of Ramsey Road. Turn west onto Astro, and the gallery is about a half block down on the left. Featuring new art shows each month, the association also holds multiple workshops and special presentations.
