Commentary by Bob Bland
Special to the Herald/Review
Our country is suffering from eight years of failed policies and we desperately need to get back on the right track. Barack Obama and Joe Biden offer a campaign that is based on change you can believe in.
• Good jobs at good pay: The new administration will cut taxes on working families while eliminating tax breaks that President Bush gave to the wealthiest Americans. Democrats will ensure a trade policy that opens up foreign markets to support good American jobs. We will use trade agreements to spread labor and environmental standards around the world and end agreements that fail to live up to those important benchmarks.
Obama and Biden will restore the stability of the housing market by cracking down on brokers and lenders and expanding the mortgage deduction. Obama will move the economy away from foreign oil and move toward energy from the sun and wind, while moving forward with stop-gap measures such as drilling for oil offshore when it can be done without destroying our environment. The construction involved in the move to renewable energy will create millions of good-paying jobs, many in Cochise County.

Finally, Obama will responsibly end the Iraq war, bring our troops home safely, end the spending of $10 billion borrowed each month on a country with a huge surplus, and let the Iraqis decide their own future. This will end a drain on our economy.
• Health care: The election of Obama will bring a universal health care plan that will provide affordable, quality health care coverage for every American. Its efficiency will reduce the cost of health care and insure the 47 million Americans — including nearly 9 million children — who now lack health insurance. Obama will make available a new national health plan so all Americans can buy affordable health coverage that is similar to the plan available to members of Congress. This plan will bring guaranteed eligibility, comprehensive benefits, affordable premiums and co-pays, and financial assistance for those who need it.
• World-class education: Barack Obama will launch an agenda that provides care, learning and support to families with children from birth up to 5 years old. Democrats will improve teacher compensation by rewarding expert, accomplished teachers for taking on challenging assignment. Obama will reduce the high school dropout rate and close the achievement gap by investing in proven intervention strategies.
Democrats will energize and challenge our secondary education system. Six million middle and high school students read below grade level. High school students rank 28th out of 40 countries in mathematics and 19th out of 40 countries in science. Obama will create a tax credit that will make tuition at community colleges free and will cover up to two-thirds the cost of tuition at the public colleges and universities.
• Real national security: Obama and Biden bring solid experience and a depth of understanding to foreign affairs. They will return to the traditional bipartisan policy based on international cooperation. This will be used to produce military support for a clear victory in Afghanistan, remove the threat of the terrorists in Pakistan, and combat terrorism wherever it festers.
Obama will expand and enhance the military and spend homeland dollars on the basis of risk. He will ensure coordination with state, local and tribal jurisdictions so first-responders are better prepared. To succeed, our homeland security and military actions must be based on intelligence targeted at real threats.
Obama will urgently seek to reduce the risks from nuclear weapons, biological attacks and cyberwarfare. This will include using tougher multilateral sanctions and aggressive diplomacy to ensure that no additional nations — including Iran — develop nuclear weapons.
Obama will demand the military and VA coordinate to provide a transition from active duty. He will fund VA medical care, allow all veterans into the VA, improve mental health treatment and care for brain injury, fix the benefits bureaucracy and combat homelessness. For current and future seniors, Democrats will protect Social Security by ensuring solvency protecting benefits. He will strengthen retirement savings, require full disclosure of pension benefits, eliminate income taxes for seniors making less than $50,000 and expand savings incentives for working families.
