Political events

Democratic Women of Southeastern Arizona have changed their meeting place to Pueblo del Sol Country Club, until the end of 2008. The club will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Reservations are required. Call 803-0815.

The next League of Women Voters candidates forum is slated for Wednesday, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., in the Sierra Vista City Council Chambers. The Arizona Legislative District 25 candidates for House and Senate seats are invited to speak. They include state representative candidates: Ric Boyer, D-Hereford; Pat Fleming, D-Sierra Vista; Timathy Davies, R-Marana; David Stevens, R-Sierra Vista; and state senator candidates: Manny Alvarez, D-Elfrida; and Mary Ann Black, R-Sierra Vista.



Due to lack of candidate participation, the League of Women Voters has had to cancel its planned Sept. 24 candidates forum for District 30 House and Senate positions.

Sheriff Larry Dever will be the guest speaker at the Military Officers Association of America, Coronado Chapter, dinner on Thursday, at 6 p.m., in the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre on Fort Huachuca. The Thunder Mountain Republican Women’s Club will meet at 11 a.m. on Sept. 23 for lunch at the Pueblo del Sol Country Club. The featured speakers will be Mary Ann Black, candidate for State Senator District 25; and Gail Griffin on behalf of David Stevens, candidate for State House of Representatives, District 25. Griffin will explain the 2008 ballot measures (propositions and initiatives), and she will also report on her experiences at the Republican National Convention. Bisbee

The Sierra Vista Area Gardeners Club will have its annual fall plant sale today, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the Bisbee Farmers Market in Warren under the big tree. The club will meet on Thursday, from 1 to 4 p.m., at the Oscar Yrun Center. Angel Rutherford will present a slideshow. Visit svgardenclub.org.

The Copper Queen Hotel today is sponsoring a fundraising concert for the National Day of the Cowboy. Tickets are an $8 donation to preserve the cowboy heritage. Music by local groups include Terry Wolfe, Night Life, Fiddler Jake and Pat Gahn. During the day, there will be gunfights by the Helldorado Mavericks out of Tombstone. Cowboy poet extraordinaire Bud Strom is the master of ceremonies. The concert will be from 2 to 6 p.m. today in City Park.

Huachuca City

VFW Post 10342 in Huachuca City is collecting donations for the Wounded Warrior Program. Items needed include winter jackets, board games, black backpacks, pajamas/work-out pants, video games (Wii, PS2, PS3, Xbox 360) and DVDs (new releases only, and no war-related or overly violent content, please). Monetary donations are also acceptable. Make checks out to VFW Post 10342. The deadline is Thursday. Call 452-0741, 227-9112 or 227-2547 to arrange for pickup of your donation. Sierra Vista

The Tombstone Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Sierra Vista will hold a Constitution Day Celebration near the flagpole in Veterans’ Memorial Park. It will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Bring a bell and join the group for Bells Across America held in all time zones. The sound of patriotism will be heard simultaneously from coast to coast. Huachuca Audubon Society will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Horace Steele Conference Room at Cochise College. Naturalist and bat researcher Anne Graf will will present “Focus on our Mysterious Bats.” Call HAS president Michael W. Guest at 378-0667.

Sierra Vista Regional Health Center Wellness Depot will be hosting a pre-school “Healthy Habits” DVD viewing on the third Wednesday of every month beginning on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Wellness Depot next to the children’s play area in the Mall at Sierra Vista. The film for Wednesday is “The Magic School Bus: Human Body.”

¡Arriba! is a program designed to empower and enhance the quality of life for teen girls ages 13-19 dealing with self-esteem challenges, depression, anxiety and other issues affecting today’s young women. There will be five weekly workshops, beginning Sept. 22, and a weekend retreat. Arriba! is funded by a Unidas philanthropy grant from the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona. The Local Emergency Planning Committee of Cochise County will meet at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Room 200 of the Science Building, Cochise Community College, 901 N. Colombo Ave. The training topic to be presented by committee member Glenn Minuth.

The Sierra Vista Historical Society will dedicate a historical plaque at noon on Friday at the site of the Old Adobe Church, 409 W. Fry Blvd. This church was built in 1936.

The Thunder Mountain H.O.G. will hold “Rally in the Alley” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 20 in the alley near the Harley-Davidson dealership on Fry Boulevard. Music, raffles, silent auction, vendors, food and more will at the event. The event is open to all bikes and bikers.
