Gene M. Beach, 75, passed away Sept. 9, 2008, due to complications after prostate cancer treatments. He was born and raised in Grattan Township near Northome, Minn.

Gene was drafted into the Army in 1953 and served his country for more than 22 years in strategic communications. While stationed in Japan, he met his wife, Michi, who worked as a telephone operator at Camp Sendai.

Gene took his family on an adventure of a lifetime to Asmara, Ethiopia, from 1964-67. During this period, he was sent on a temporary assignment which supported the communication network for the NASA Gemini series of missions. The team experienced a close call due to multiple engine failures on their transport aircraft.

He became a decorated Vietnam veteran serving a tour of duty from July 1968-69 and was next stationed at Camp Zama, Japan, from 1969 to 1974. His last project at Camp Zama was the groundwork for a future cable TV distribution system.

His final military assignment was at Fort Huachuca. After retiring from the Army, he was employed at Fort Huachuca as a security officer, and thereafter in the supply section supporting the various aircraft at the airport hanger. Gene loved classic cars and took pride in refurbishing them. He longed to return to his home in Whetstone to finish work on a 1941 Buick Special.

Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Michi; son, Art, and his wife, Carol; daughter, Barbara, and her husband, Cliff; and two grandchildren, Daniel and Bryan.

At the request of Gene, there will only be a private family memorial. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to prostate cancer research at the American Cancer Society.
