SIERRA VISTA — The reversal of a fumble call on Dobson’s first series of the second half spelled disaster for the Buena Colt football team.
Buena, who had a near-perfect second quarter, had put 10 points on the board to cut Dobson’s lead to 14-10 at the half.
Buena had the momentum going for them entering the third quarter of play when an official signaled that Buena had recovered the ball on its own 25 after a Mustang receiver fumbled the ball after catching a pass.
As the Colt defensive unit started off the field and the offensive unit ran on, whistles blew and the next signal that was given was by an official who was closer to the play. He overruled the first official, saying the ball was recovered by Dobson.

After an official’s time out and an explanation to head coach Kent Holland as to what happened the momentum changed and two plays later the Mustangs were in the end zone with their third touchdown of the game and a 21-10 lead.
Buena had trouble regrouping after that, punting the ball away on two of their last four possessions and having the clock run out on them as the game ended.
Holland refused to comment on the official’s call.
Dobson got on the board with 6:26 to play in the first quarter on a 20-yard pass play from quarterback Jordan Gruber to end Tyler French and Cesar Vallejo booted the first of three PAT’s to give the Mustangs a 7-0 lead.
Buena tied the game early in the second quarter after Joe Garcia intercepted a Mustang pass at the Dobson 47.
Three plays later, Colt quarterback Joe Wallace hit DeChe Milburn on a 31-yard pass in the end zone and Brandon Porter booted the PAT that knotted the score.
Dobson came right back, going 80 yards in 11 plays with Terrance Martin bolting 37 yards for the score that put the visitors up 14-7 with 5:48 to play in the half.
With time running down in the half, Buena mustered a drive that took them from their own 10-yard line to the Mustang 16, but with three seconds to play in the half, had to settle for a Porter 33-yard field goal as time expired.
The Mustangs’ final score came on a 17-yard run by Dylan Cortez with 7:26 to play.
“We have to respond no matter what happens,” Holland said. “We need to keep focused and keep the momentum and keep going in the right direction.”
Buena still had problems running the ball, but did fare better than in last week’s opener, rushing for 69 yards.
Trey Brown led the Colt ground game with 41 yards on eight carries.
Wallace had a good night throwing the ball, hitting on 11-for-20 for 146 yards, including going 7-for-9 and a touchdown in the second quarter. Milburn had five receptions for 91 yards and one touchdown
Derek Lane led the Colt defense with 23 defensive points. Daniel Foster finished with 19 points and DeAndre Little with 18 points.
In other games involving Southern region teams, Mountain Ridge defeated Sunnyside, 14-5; North Canyon bet Tucson High, 20-14; Pinnacle defeated Ironwood Ridge, 10-6; Marcus de Niza routed Marana Mountain View, 55-0; and Salpointe Catholic got by Basha, 14-6.
Buena is idle next week and will host Gilbert High on Sept. 19.
