SIERRA VISTA — A 17-year-old was arrested at a gas station Wednesday and charged with possession of marijuana for sale.

Sierra Vista police arrested him just after 1 p.m. at the Shell gas station, 1497 E. Fry Blvd. The teenager, who name was not released, was taken into custody after police completed an investigation that started around 7:30 a.m. that day at a Motel 6, said Officer Tracy Grady, spokeswoman for the Sierra Vista Police Department

Due to the nature of the charges and his age, the teen was taken to the Cochise County Jail in Bisbee, Grady said.

He also was charged with hindering prosecution stemming from the Motel 6 investigation, as well as possession of paraphernalia, Grady said.

A search found 112 grams of marijuana on him, nearly one-fourth of a pound, she said.

The charge of possession for sale comes from “the totality of the circumstances surrounding the investigation,” she said.

On Thursday, police did  not provide further information on the initial investigation at the Motel 6.

" ...make that 35-50 y.o.. Although every generation (dating back to ancient Greece) has thought there was something uniquely wrong with its younger generation; that they are somehow wilder and more out of control (forgetting -- perhaps intentionally -- their own youthful trangressions), this current generation of 35-50 y.o. has gone further than any other to criminalize normal human behavior and seek to deny the fundamentals of human existence, particularly one's right to simply be free to do as one pleases so long as one doesn't violate the equal rights of others to do the same. Bunch of busybodies. "

" 'stoners' have been around for a long time. 1/4 lb? Sounds like it was his own stash. How the law can come up with an amount they say equals a "selling" amount is crazy. Scare him (he is scared silly now) and fine him, community service and probation-with mandatory drug tests of his body. No hard jail time. OH, a 17 y.o. does not have ot be in school!!! I graduated at 17 y.o. Dependson his birthdate...Ciao "

" This generation of adults is the most hypocritical ever; they've devoted their lives to outlawing adolescense. If you smoke pot, lock 'em up and throw away the key. If you're 18 & have sex with your 17 y.o. classmate, lock 'em up. This is a society out of control (not the kids - they're doing what kids have done for generations -- it's this particular group of adults in the 35-45 y.o. range -- they forget they were kids once. It's a shame they get their way - we should go back and lock them up for everything they gotawaywith. "

" Let's see, there's hiking, biking, skating, swimming, photography, movies, school clubs, volunteering, school clubs, creative classes (at the community college), helping out at home (beyond regular chores),being in school when you're supposed to be, or by age 17... GETTING A PART-TIME JOB. Learn to use your imagination and stop whining. All people are either part of the solution or part of the problem. If it's the latter, like the boy in this article, prepare to enter the "school of (really) hard knocks" in the program called "survival" in prison. It's all about choices. "

" Concerned Citizen Wrote "Quite frankly this kid should be tried as an adult and then put in jail forever." Are you high? It's weed. It's not like he's out there raping and killing people. Let's put a kid in jail for doing the same thing half the people in the US has done at one time in their lives. I'm certain that will help the kid become a better person. "

" Uh, you have heard of the Huachuca Mtsn, haven't you? How about Carr Peak? The San Pedro River? There are plenty of outdoor activities and volunteer opportunities for young kids. They just need to use some initiative and perhaps some parental guidance to steer them in these more productive (although less lucrative) endeavors. "

" Lets see, a 17 yo at 730AM at Motel 6, and then at 1PM at a gas station. And "Not suprised" is blaming the city for this? All this during school hours. Actually attending school is creative. This young man made his choice now let him pay the consequences. It is not up to the city to entertain the youth. It seems that everyone wants everything handed to them on a silver plater, and when it is not they cry about it being the cities fault instead of taking personal responsibilities.17 is old enough to know right from wrong. "

To Not Surprised wrote on Sep 5, 2008 9:09 AM:

" That is the most ignorant statement I have ever read here, to blame the city because he had nothing to do. Many teens have been raised in this town prior to the cove and park and they did not run out and search for a quarter pound of dope to sell because they had nothing to do. Sounds like he had his afternoon activies well planned! "

" Puhleeze give me a break. Young people need to take the initiative and be creative. Why does someone have to organize something to keep teens busy? I'm a Boomer and we didn't have stuff like kids have today. We made our own fun. We survived and are better for it. "

" Yes, there are other groups of kids besides skaters and jocks, they're called "stoners". "

" By age 17, they are supposed to know right from wrong, and be able to think on their own. It is not the community's responsibility to offer something for each individual interest. Gee - maybe the library, or study, or volunteer?? They deal drugs because they want the $$, not because there is nothing else for them to do. "

" Even though I agree that there isnt much for kids to do here, it is enough with the blaming the city. I grew up on a small Army base with less to do then here so we entertained ourselves. Its a choice these kids make to do stupid stuff like this, not the cities. Kids need to make the right choices and find legal things to do with their time. I have children and dont blame the city for any of their misbehavior. Parents need to get involved and help them find better things to do. "

" I am not surprised to read a story like this! When Sierra Vista has nothing for young kids to do this is what young adults will turn to! we need to have something creative for kids to do after school or on the weekend beside the only two things, the cove and bike park. not all kids will be riding bikes or skateboards and swimming! there are other groups of kids besides skaters and jocks!
