SIERRA VISTA — The Buena volleyball team’s season opener didn’t end well, but the Colts did have some good moments come out of the game.

Catalina Foothills beat Buena in three games, 25-23, 25-18, 29-27.

“I thought we had the opportunity to play better than we did,” said Buena head coach Amy Cooper. “I felt we had an initial rotation that was really clicking.”

In the first game, Buena tied the game at 10 on a kill by Angie Banks. The Colts took the lead up through 19 points when the Falcons battled back to regain the lead for good.

In the second game, Buena jumped out to an early lead before Foothills tied it at 11. The Falcons led by as much as 10 points before Buena turned it around with kills by Banks and blocks by Kacey Bock and Britney Hollabaugh at the net.

“I felt like Angie Banks had a great game, and Britney Hollabaugh had a strong performance at the net,” Cooper said. “Our passing on the offense was having a hard time getting her the ball, but she was making her own plays on the defense.”

Hollabaugh ended with three blocks and five kills while Angie Banks came away with 10 digs, two blocks and seven kills on the night.

Again in the third game, Buena started strong by going ahead 12-4 as the Falcons struggled to keep the ball within the lines. But Foothills came back from its deficit and Buena couldn’t dig itself out. With the score tied at 22, the lead went back and forth between the teams before the Falcons came out with the win.

“They started chipping away at the score, and I don’t know what we need to do to get to that higher level of play,” Cooper said. “I thought we were caught on our heels a lot.”

Megan Haymore and Molly Murphy both finished the game with nine digs, and Murphy and Megan Cooper came away with 10 assists each. The freshman and junior varsity teams both won their games against the Falcons on Tuesday night.

“Even though we did play pretty well tonight,” Cooper said. “We need more consistency.”

Cooper said the Colts will be working at practice on getting a series of points in a row to grasp quicker and consistent play before the team takes on Red Mountain at home Thursday.

" I think everyone in the stands last night saw how much potential this team has. They have the talent and ability to do very well this season. We are all here rooting for this team! Good Luck and keep working hard! "

" Sad news but not surprising. Catalina Foothills is not perennial powerhouse in the 4A since they lost quite a few seniors last year, but they have a very good setter and defensive specialist in Svancarra. Morrison isn't too bad either; that's why she's headed to North Carolina to play her #1 sport; softball. "
