BISBEE — Jack Porter and Luche Giacomino were the big winners Tuesday night in the primary election.
Porter, who resigned his council seat several months ago to run for mayor, won with nearly 63 percent, or 839 votes. He believes his experience, community service and stand on street issues won him the election.
“People I talked to were concerned about the streets. I plan to work with the council to economize, so we can absorb costs and still be able to repair our streets. I thank the voters for their faith in me,” he said.
Porter needed 50 percent of the vote, plus one more vote, to win outright the mayor’s position. He did so handily.

In the vote tally, Betty Lindstrom garnered 226 votes, followed by Jack Whetstone with 172, Lee Spinks with 50 and 18-year-old Robert Bryant with 44 votes.
Giacomino, who will be serving her third term on the council, pulled in 61 percent of the vote with 281 Ward 2 residents casting their ballots for her. She, too, needed 50 percent of the vote, plus one more vote, to win the position.
The incumbent defeated her challenger Jeff Harris, who garnered 177 votes, or 38 percent.
“I thank everyone who voted for me. I plan to keep doing what I have been doing for the past eight years,” she said.
Appointed councilmen Ken Budge and Boyd Nicholl ran unopposed and will represent Ward 1. Budge will serve a four-year term, while Nicholl will serve two years.
Bennie Scott, representing Ward 3, also ran unopposed and will retain his council seat for the next four years.
