City honors teens for their volunteerism

SIERRA VISTA — The city’s Department of Parks & Leisure Services recently honored teen volunteers and junior life guards for their service during the summer.

The event was held at the Ethel Berger Center on July 31st. The teenagers ranged in age from 12 to 16 and volunteered a total of 3,217 hours.

After an introduction by Laura Killberg, special events and sports supervisor, Parks & Leisure Services Director John Startt III and City Manager Chuck Potucek and Mayor Bob Strain thanked the volunteers and awarded them certificates of appreciation for their work.

The teen volunteers include Carina Ashline, Tiara Bright, Abigail Brzozwski, Kristina Burch, Scilla Burton, Alanna Colan, Miranda Dalton, Shannon Dooley, Ian Emrie, Dominic Epps, Ian Gunn, Casey Haller, Andrea Haller, Mary Heeren, Matt Humphrey, Ian Jacobs, Douglas Jewett, Gloria Kostur, Shanequa Matthias, Derek Mayette, Jessyka Melanson, Michaela McBride, Lisabeth Nichols, Giovanni Pope, Alina Quach, Gary Ryu, Tess Salmon, Whitney Sleezer, Zechariah Stone, Jeramy Talbott, Tina Townsend, Caleb Webb, Devan Wieczorek, Keleigh Williams, Tyler Wilson and Keiran Zehmisch.

Jurnior lifeguards include Sam Borboa, Maile Burnett, Meagan Chaney, Morganne Cloud, Jerriko Dunn, Martin Freeman, Dylan Hernandez, Daniel Higgins, Jeannine Ihli, Kaitlyn Leblanc, Torin McDaniel, Karla Merlos Chante Mitchell, Blakey Mosher, Taylor Pembrook, Nickolas Rodriquez, Jeffrey Rodriquez, Becca Rowland, Brandon Schofield, Jonathan Stickler, Hollie Tranfaglia, Ben Wallace, Rebecca Wallace, Jennifer Westermann and Mark Westermann.

After dining on New York- and Chicago-style pizza catered by Big Mo’s of Huachuca City, the volunteers and their families created their own ice-cream sundaes.  

“The services these kids provide to our department are invaluable,” said Karen Lamy, the program coordinator. The volunteers assist at sports camp, Kids World camp, and at the Cove at the front desk and as junior lifeguards.

The teen volunteers work during the summer and at special events during the year, such as the Oktoberfest in September, the Children’s Holiday Party in November and the Easter Egg Hunt in the spring.
