John Matthews

Aug. 12, 1935 - Aug. 6, 2008

Published/Last Modified on Sunday, Aug 10, 2008 - 05:21:14 am MST

After many years of coping with the multiple effects of basal cell nevus syndrome, John Matthews is now free of pain and illness.

He is survived by Kay, his wife of 46 years, and his siblings, Shirley Gallmann, Donald “Bud” Matthews, Marlynn (Bob) Sommers, James (Jeannie) Matthews and Bill (Janett) Matthews. His parents, Ruth and Donald, and siblings George and Theresa preceded him in death. There are also numerous nieces and nephews on his side of the family, as well as the children of Kay’s siblings, all of whom he loved. John loved animals and birds, and his pets, Curly and especially Trip, were beloved sidekicks.

He was born in Tucson, Ariz., and grew up in Vail, Ariz., often stating that he was a “grad-u-ate of Vail El-e-men-tary School.” Following graduation from Tucson High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, where he served honorably for 3 1/2 years. After his discharge from the service, he chose to remain in Tampa, Fla., where he was employed by Continental Can Co. for 27 years, retiring when the plant was closed. John and Kay then moved to Arizona, where they have made their home in Hereford, Ariz., since 1990. He loved his home in the San Pedro Valley and made many friends there who will miss him.

Extreme gratitude is hereby expressed for the care and compassion of Maggie, Christie and Kelly at the Southern Arizona Veterans Administration Clinic in Sierra Vista, Ariz., and to hospice caregivers, nurses Adele, Heidi, Helga, Jackie, Margaret and Sharon, and tech/aides, Bonita, Maria and Stella. They often gave services about and beyond the requirements of their jobs and are deeply appreciated.

Those who wish to may make donations in John’s memory to any of the following: Hospice/Casa de la Paz, 300 El Camino Real, Sierra Vista AZ 85635; any bird or animal support group; or a charity of your choice.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1300 Buffalo Soldier Trail, in Sierra Vista.

Family and friends are invited to join together in an informal luncheon and celebration of John’s life following the service. Please call (520) 266-0577 with your intention of attending the celebration, whereupon time and location will be provided.

Arrangements are being handled by Hatfield Funeral Home in Sierra Vista.
