The Cochise County League of Women Voters has upcoming candidate forums: Friday, 4:30 p.m., Sierra Vista Public Library, Mona Bishop Room, District 1 county supervisor candidates, incumbent Pat Call and challengers Chris Campas and Hank Copeland; Aug. 12, 6 p.m., Sierra Vista City Council Chambers, five candidates for three Sierra Vista City Council seats, incumbents Carol Dockter, Craig Johnson, Rick Mueller and challengers Dot Greener and Scott Thompson; Aug. 14, 6 p.m., Sierra Vista Public Library, Mona Bishop Room, candidates for Superior Court Judge, Division 4.
The Huachuca Area Republican Women’s Club will have a luncheon at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center on Aug. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m. The speaker will be Tom Horne, the state superintendent of public instruction. Bisbee
The newly formed Cub Scout Pack 401 will have its first meeting at 6 p.m. Monday at the Warren Community Church. The boys will be assigned their dens and will meet their new leaders. Call Shirley Doughty at 432-2050 for information about joining.
Sierra Vista
Sierra Vista Historical Society will have a historical site plaque dedication on Wednesday at 10 a.m. for the Carmichael House (today the home of Sierra Vista Realty), 301 N. Garden Ave. The house was built in 1927 by William and Margaret Carmichael.
Cochise County Master Gardeners will meet Thursday, from 5 to 6 p.m., in the public meeting room of Groth Hall at the University of Arizona South Campus. The public is invited to hear Tom Wood, wildlife biologist, co-founder of the Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory and Cooperative Extension Water Wise educator, talk about “Gardening for, with (and in spite of) Wildlife.” Call Sarah Turan at 803-0718.
The 2008 U.S. Army Soldier Show will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday and at 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday at the Buena Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, but you must have a ticket. Tickets are available at Murr Community Center on Fort Huachuca and at Sierra Vista Safeway. Call 533-2404.
Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory is banding hummingbirds until October. The sessions are held at the San Pedro House, located east of Sierra Vista on Highway 90. They are always from 4 to 6 p.m. Banding dates are: Saturday, Aug. 15, Sept. 1, Sept. 6, Sept. 15, Sept. 19, Sept. 27 and Oct. 4. Bring a chair. For a donation of $25, you can “adopt” a hummingbird. The Sierra Vista Woman’s Club will present its annual fashion show and luncheon, “We Wear The Pants,” on Sept. 6, at 11:30 a.m., at the Windemere Hotel. Tickets are $25 and won’t be available at the door. Call 803-8809 or obtain tickets at Safeway. All proceeds benefit nursing scholarships at Cochise College, the University of Arizona, music awards to Buena High School students and other local needs.
