Dec. 12, 1922 - July 20, 2008

Guadalupe “Lupe” Ybarra Gonzales, 85, a 48-year resident of the Sierra Vista, Ariz., area, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2008.

He was born Dec. 12, 1922, the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe, in Jerome, Ariz., to Praxedis and Librada (Ybarra) Gonzalez, who had immigrated to the United States from Jalisco, Mexico.

After graduating from High School in Morenci, Ariz., he left home to join the U.S. Army and was stationed first in Australia, then later in New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan during the occupation.

After the end of the Second World War, he studied automotive repair at the National School in Los Angeles. Upon graduating, he eventually married Jessie Soto from La Verne, Calif. Together they had four children. Lupe was highly respected as an excellent mechanic and had a long association with the Montoya family of Sierra Vista, for whom he worked until his retirement in 1997.

He enjoyed working on cars on the side even up to late summer 2007 when his health began to decline.

He will be missed as a loving father, grandfather, uncle, brother and friend to those who knew him — a man of integrity and honesty.

Lupe is survived by his sons, Robert of Tucson, Ariz., Phillip (Sibylle) and Adam Gonzales of Sierra Vista; and his daughter, Monica Alexander, also of Sierra Vista; as well as his former wife, Jessie Collins of Sierra Vista, and his friend Lydia Quijada of Tucson.

He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, William Garrett of Cheyenne, Wyo., Alexander Gonzales of Phoenix, Lindsay Alexander, Mathew Gonzales, and Joseph Gonzales of Sierra Vista. He has two surviving sisters, Isabel Gonzalez and Elvira Nabor of Phoenix. He was preceded in death by his parents, Librada and Praxedis Gonzalez; his brother, Alfredo Gonzalez; sisters, Rafaela Mendoza and Herlinda Titzler.

In lieu of flowers, the family would suggest memorial contributions in Lupe’s name to St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church Building Fund, 800 N. Taylor Drive, Sierra Vista AZ 85635.

A visitation will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 24, 2008, at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church, 800 N. Taylor Drive, followed by the recitation of the rosary with scriptural meditations at 7 p.m. There will be a concelebrated Mass of the Christian burial at St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church at noon on Friday, July 25, 2008, the Feast of St. James the Apostle, with a committal service following at the Southern Arizona Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Sierra Vista.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Jensen’s Sierra Vista Mortuary.
