The Greater Huachuca Area Democratic Club will meet at 12:15 p.m. Saturday in the Mona Bishop Room of the Sierra Vista Public Library. Speakers will be John Michael from the Baja Democrats, who will speak about the campaign to target no-party voters, and Rudy Mares, who is a lobbyist for one of the payday-lender propositions on the ballot this November. Sheriff Larry Dever, seeking re-election, and author J.A. Jance will be at the American Legion Hall in Tombstone on Aug. 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Jance will sign copies of “Damage Control,” the latest Sheriff Brady book. The Huachuca Area Republican Women’s Club will have a luncheon at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center on Aug. 11, starting at 10:30 a.m. The speaker will be Tom Horne, the state superintendent of public instruction. Bisbee

Chapter T, PEO Sisterhood, will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 11 at 425 Santa Cruz. The hostess is Carol Loy with Mary Killary serving as co-hostess. The program is “Our Hearts Entwined.” Call Nancy Davies at 432-4422.

Sierra Vista

There will be a Water Wise workshop, “Plants, Plants, Plants!” on Saturday, from 9 to 11 a.m., in the meeting room of the University of Arizona South campus, 1140 N. Colombo Ave, Sierra Vista. The workshop will show you many plants that are perfect for Cochise County landscapes. Call the Water Wise program at 458-8278, Ext. 2141.

Sierra Vista Historical Society will have a historical site plaque dedication on Aug. 6 at 10 a.m. for the Carmichael House (today the home of Sierra Vista Realty), 301 N. Garden Ave. The house was built in 1927 by William and Margaret Carmichael.

The 2008 U.S. Army Soldier Show will be presented at 7 p.m. Aug. 8 and at 2 and 7 p.m. Aug. 9 at the Buena Performing Arts Center. Admission is free, but you must have a ticket. Tickets are available now at Murr Community Center on Fort Huachuca and at Sierra Vista Safeway. Call 533-2404.

There will be a Community Information Fair and annual membership drive sponsored by the Fort Huachuca Community Spouses’ Club on Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Thunder Mountain Activity Centre on Fort Huachuca. TMAC is located at the corner of Irwin and Kelsay roads, Building 70525. The FHCSC is a nonprofit, private organization whose mission is to provide entertaining activities for its members while raising funds for worthy organizations and providing scholarships to aspiring college students in our local community. The Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory is banding hummingbirds until October. The sessions are held at the San Pedro House, located east of Sierra Vista on Highway 90. They are always from 4 to 6 pm., but the day of the week sometimes varies. Banding dates are: Aug. 2, Aug. 9, Aug. 15, Sept. 1, Sept. 6, Sept. 15, Sept. 19, Sept. 27 and finally on Oct. 4. Huachuca Audubon Society will have three-hour weekly birdwatching field trips to Gordon Lewis’ property on the San Pedro River. The group will meet at 7 a.m. on Monday mornings, at the pull-off just west of the bridge, on the north side of Highway 92. The site is near Palominas. The Sierra Vista Environmental Operations Park has bird walks on Sundays at 7 a.m. The walks take about two hours and are led by docents from Southeastern Arizona Bird Observatory, Huachuca Audubon Society and the Friends of the San Pedro River. Call 432-1388.

Remember when you got dressed up and danced to your favorite big band tunes? A night on the town consisted of a wonderful meal, dancing and listening to the best music ever. Joe Anton’s Desert Swing Orchestra will perform at the Ethel Berger Center on Aug. 23. The doors will open at 6 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6:30. Advanced tickets are required and can be purchased starting July 2 for $15 apiece.

A six-week course, “Learn to Identify Plants,” will be taught by Cecile Lumer, Ph.D. The class will meet Fridays from 10 a.m. to noon, from Aug. 15 to Sept. 19, at Cochise College. The cost is $120 and will go to support the Cochise County Herbarium. Enrollment is limited to 20 people. A $25 deposit will reserve a place in the class. The Sierra Vista Woman’s Club will present its annual fashion show and luncheon, “We Wear The Pants,” on Sept. 6, at 11:30 a.m., at the Windemere Hotel. Tickets are $25 and won’t be available at the door. Call 803-8809 or obtain tickets at Safeway. All proceeds benefit nursing scholarships at Cochise College, the University of Arizona, music awards to Buena High School students and other unmet community needs.

“Breaking Through” by Francisco Jimenez has been chosen for One Book One Community 2008. The community is encouraged to read and discuss this book at book club meetings and other activities during the next few months. The author is slated to visit the community Oct. 23 and 24. The One Book One Community program is sponsored by the Sierra Vista Commission on Cultural Diversity with the support of the Sierra Vista Public Library, the Friends of the Library and many generous community contributors. Good Neighbor Alliance is currently in need of good volunteers. The current opportunities for individuals and buddies include computer training, Day Shower Program Monitor, Social Time Leader, administrative assistance in office and evening meal preparation. Tours of Samaritan Station emergency homeless shelter, 420 N. Seventh St., are conducted weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. If you like challenges and are interested in helping our homeless adults and families, please contact GNA at 439-0776 or gnashelter@qwestoffice.net. Those who are curious about GNA are encouraged to set up a tour to learn more about us.

VICaP has partnered with Phones for Life Inc., a nationwide, nonprofit organization seeking to improve the lives of senior citizens, victims of domestic violence and adults with serious disabilities through cell phone technology. Founded in 1999 by Dr. Dee L’Archeveque, an emergency/critical care physician, Phones for Life is the only nonprofit organization currently distributing free cell phones with minutes. Phones for Life relies on cell phone donations by individuals, corporations and schools nationwide. Cell phones will be collected during the month of July and can be dropped off at the VICaP office inside the Sierra Vista Regional Health Center. Call 459-8146.
