Web cast focuses on immigration

HEREFORD — The founder of a new Web cast recorded in Cochise County that focuses on border and illegal immigration issues says the program is already popular among listeners and he is hopeful it will only get better.

“On the Border with Al Garza,” which first aired July 14, is hosted by Garza, who is perhaps best known for his role as national executive director of the border watch group Minuteman Civil Defense Corps.

Chuck Alton decided to start Cochise Talk due to the lack of local originated radio in Sierra Vista and Cochise County. Garza consented to be the program’s host. The show appeals to conservatives, Christians and patriotic people, Alton said.

Four times per week new programming is produced. It is recorded in segments and then edited. Then a one-hour show is aired continuously in a loop on the Web site www.cochisetalk.com until the next program is produced.

“Our country has been transformed into an oasis for illegal aliens and their uneducated Third World mentality. We have been sold out by the various people we elected to represent our nation’s best interests,” Garza said during Thursday’s episode.

“Each of us has become subservient to the demands placed upon us by special interest groups, crooked politicians and corporate America,” he continued. “We must assemble together as Americans to demonstrate to the rest of the globe that our land and our way of life and our Christian principles are not on the market at any price.”

Thursday’s episode also featured an interview with Joe King, a Pima County rancher who has experienced problems with illegal immigrants on his property.

Listeners are encouraged to leave comments by either calling a telephone hotline or sending an e-mail. Garza reads some of the e-mails on the air.

Some of the recorded voicemail messages also are played during the show.

Alton said the program is off to “a good start,” and added, “It’s got people buzzing.” The Web site has received hits from as far away as Australia, New Zealand and United Kingdom.

“In the first week we were on, there were 15,000 hits on our various pages and about 800 discreet listeners. And we have not spent any money on publicity. It’s all from word of mouth,” he said.

Garza and Alton said they are involved in the Web cast because they want to raise awareness regarding the illegal immigration issue. They admit that if they were living in Mexico and earning the working wage there, they, too, would try to come to the United States in search of a better future. But, Alton said, the matter has gotten out of control and the government needs to take action.

“We are not racists and we don’t dislike Mexicans,” Alton said.

Garza agreed, and pointed out he is actually an American of Hispanic descent.

" The illegal aliens are not made up of only “Mexicans”. There are Columbians, Guatemalans and other not so brown races such as Irish, Chinese and so on. And maybe the reason you and Mr. Alton are perceived as being racist it is because you are singling out one race. Now if everyone really cares about fixing the “issue”, then people need stop hiring illegal aliens to do the work of a US citizen for half the price. But good luck in finding a US citizen or legal alien that is willing to pick lettuce from sun up to sun down. "

Mexico cannot, will not even take care of itself, what a joke of a nation!!!Besides, most of us are armed, Mexico will have a very very difficult time subjegating us! And answer this if possiible, if you think Mexico is so great, then why are people willing to die in an attempt to get out? what all the freedoms, all the economic opportunity? the great love for the mother land? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Mexico is actually a dependent of the United States in almost EVERYway! " You want racism, try "La Raza" (the race). We should cut to the chase and annex Mexico; they are incapable of governing themselves as their history shows. And I'm not conservative or christian (in fact christianity has been part of Mexico's problem - Catholic Church's ban against birth control). "

" I agree with you Mr. Garza, I do not quite understand how so many people mistake "illegal" with racism...perhaps they do not own dictionaries. I,like most people am second or third generation american and resent being called racist for wanting laws enforced. Keep up the good work. and thank you! please continue to attempt to educate such people. "

" Al Garza, I certainly consider you and your wife as great American citizens regardless of location of birth. You served your country quite well as a U.S. Marine. Semper Fidelis and move forward beyond this nonsense. From a WW2 Marine Corps veteran. "

Citizen wrote on Jul 27, 2008 11:12 AM:

" Well "Al" that makes her confused. The world is too diverse for people who live their lives in the 60s and like to hold onto the race card. She's the product of a liberal institute that teaches if you can't win an argument or debate then throw out the word racism and watch everyone tighten up. Well that tactic doesn't work very well these days...lines are blurred and most people work side by side with different races and cultures and are tolerant of those differences. Most people want law and order though and demand illegal aliens be brought to justice. "

" Borderwoman, Consider this: I am American of Mexican heritage, I was reared and went to school as such, graduated, joined the Marine Corps as such, I speak and write the language, and I married my best friend who was born in Mexico. She and her parents used the legal process and became Americans; They assimilated, gave their allegiance to this country and speak English fluently. If you consider me a bigot, what does that make you? "

Chuck Alton wrote on Jul 26, 2008 6:28 AM:

" Al and I appreciate all your comments. Sorry about the confusion about exactly what we are. The Internet has become an excellent delivery system and alternative to tightly controlled broadcast stations. There is a trade-off in that folks can't listen in their car on an ordinary radio, but our programs can be downloaded and listened to on an mp3 player anywhere you go and at any time. We hope you'll give our "radio" a try... you'll find us unique and, I believe, on point and relevant. Please tell friends and family anywhere in America. "

" You need to improve your reading comprehension skills. Mr. Garza is of Mexican decent, as am I. We have no problem with LEGAL Mexican immigrants, however, we do have a BIG problem with ILLEGAL aliens, the operative word being ILLEGAL. Doesn't matter if they are Mexican or not. Judging from the posts, we're not the minority. That would be you and Mr. Shacat. "

Savage's show and the overnight coast2coast w/ George Noory are the only wortwhile programming they offer. And I can't stay up late enough for coast2coast. "

" Editor's note: Initially, this story appeared stating this was a "radio show". While similar in format, it is not broadcast over the public airwaves, so a better term would be web or pod cast. The online story was changed to reflect this. "

" To JB: The good question is "why WOULD someone go through a whole article about a new radio station," especially when the first two words of the article's title are WEB CAST. This could maybe explain why no radio station ID or frequency were listed, you think? I don't know, I just actually READ the article... So I'm not really sure. I really hope you were joking about you having "some experiAnce" at writing. If you were, that makes your comment funny, if not, it makes it just sad. "

Thank you for this great Radio show! I live in Maryland. When we come out to visit the lot in March, I'll make sure that I listen to it! Thank you again!! "

" Great news and good luck. Information is always welcome.
To "Borderwoman", if you want racist, look to La Raza and Maldef, etc. Those are the racists still trying to recapture territory they lost in 1846. Well, look what you did with what territory we left you: graft, corruption, poverty, crime, illiteracy, shall I go on?
Jon Shacat should be re-assigned because his personal bias is so apparent it affects his reporting and his bias becomes the paper's bias when they continue to allow him to be the "eyes and ears" for immigration matters. Reassign Shacat. "
