AARP Chapter 3123 will host a candidates forum for all Sierra Vista City Council and Cochise County Sheriff candidates. The forum will be held on Wedneday, at 1 p.m., at the Ethel Berger Center and will be moderated by Sierra Vista’s first lady, Jane Strain. All Sierra Vista and County residents are encouraged to attend.
Bisbee
Local herpetologist Steve Reaves will present “Snake Identification and Safety” at 5:30 p.m. today in the Copper Queen Library meeting room. The presentation will include a display of live snakes, scorpions, tarantulas and centipedes. Call the library at 432-4232.

Sierra Vista
There will be a program about the life of “Happy Jack” Ashworth at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Carr House. Ashworth was a local resident from 1900 to 1926. He was a miner, merchant, Garces postmaster and store keeper on Ramsey Road. He was a well-known local character. Research is by Ed Francis, and storytelling is by Rosemary Snapp. The Friends of the Huachuca Mountains is the host of these Sunday afternoon programs at the Carr House that are held every other Sunday and will run through Sept. 21. This is a volunteer effort. Call 378-1824. From Sierra Vista, travel south on Highway 92 to Carr Canyon Road (at the Mesquite Tree Restaurant). Turn right. Drive about 2.3 miles up Carr Canyon Road. Carr House is on the left after a concrete dip in the road.
The 12th annual Back to School Fair is slated for Saturday, from 8 a.m. to noon, at Veterans’ Memorial Park. The purpose of the fair is to provide information to families as they prepare their children for the upcoming school year. Community agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide information. Cochise Robotics Association invites the public to explore the growing field of science and technology. Join the association at 6 p.m. on Wednedsay at the Sierra Vista Public Library. Visit cochiserobotics.org.
The Filipino American Club of Southern Arizona Youth is collecting school supplies for students in need. The FIL-AM Youth ask the community to please purchase various school supplies for students of all ages. Items include, but are not limited to loose leaf paper, notebooks, construction paper, scissors, rulers, crayons, highlighters, pencils, pens, etc. Donations can be dropped off through Aug. 2 at Ashwina’s Hallmark, located at 2160 E.
