July 3

Ain’t got no money, no gas, no hope, no home. Golly gee, ain’t I poor? Suffice it to say it makes me sore at the hard-boiled Republicans. They don’t listen so what am I blathering for? McCain is pitching the same old, same old. But this is an alternative, a chance for a change and hope, from the candidate with a funny name. A better life for all, that’s his aim, especially for the little guy, medically, financially, and relief for the troops. If you truly care, give Obama a try.

I like the title of Leone Wilkerson’s letter, “We   cannot continue the old   way of thinking.” For example, Democrats should honor their promise of 2006 and stop the political corruption of earmarks in the Congress they now control. Earmarks originate in Congress, are attached to bills without debate, and are nothing more than pork barrel spending on needless pet projects that continue to drain our tax dollars and inflate our national debt. Also, Democrats should stop stonewalling the drilling of offshore and ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) oil and the building of more nuclear energy plants and oil refineries as they have done for the past 35 years so that we are no longer dependent on foreign oil. If Democrats had done the above, people wouldn’t be “struggling every day to find enough money to buy gas, put food on the table and pay bills.”

In regards to the wonderful performance by Michael Grande at the Arizona Folklore Preserve last Sunday, I have a couple of questions for Richard Zeller who thinks he has “The Last Word.” Does a standing ovation for an encore say it’s time to quit? Does applause and laughter signify one is bored? Does either suggest that he should shorten his performances? I suggest that if Richard Zeller is bored, he is always free to leave at any time. We are honored to have had the privilege to enjoy such a talented performer here in Sierra Vista.

A local restaurant has sent an invite to dine with them to everyone in this nearby mobile home village. Will we be lured by increasing weekly discounts if we eat there weekly this month? I’m trying to give my coupon away. No takers. The tables are jammed too close together, and the food is so salty you’re up drinking water all night. Not only is the food too salty, but it’s full of sugar. Whoever decided to put sugar in meat and sauces needs to think again about the pancreas that says no to added sugar. Plenty of natural sweeteners are in fruits and whole grains and even some veggies. In fewer than 150 words, como yo en casa, gracias. (I eat at home, thank you.)

Never thought I’d see the day when I paid $3.49 for a loaf of bread. Is that a bargain when gas is $3.94 and climbing? Forget that tiny and shrinking nine above the dollar price. There are people who think they’re saving a dollar instead of paying another penny per gallon for gasoline when that nine is so small you can barely see it. It ain’t goin’ nowhere tho’. Stay tuned. You’ll see the big news first in the Herald/Review, and no I don’t work there.

Here’s a little something that is a little sad. Elvis Presley’s daughter has said she has not granted permission to use her father’s song (“Viva Las Vegas”) in Viagra commercials. Apparently the rights to the song are up to someone else — authorship or something — yet she is the sole, blood descendant of Elvis! Yet they persist. Amazing. Perhaps there is no legal recourse, yet every time they use that music there are probably many people who might place Elvis “in bed with just anyone.” Not too nice. Perhaps the rights to the music are somewhere else, but his “sole, blood descendant” has requested a little sensitivity. Are we that far away from caring about responsible communication and responsible conduct?

I read with interest the letter by Stephanie L. Koppenafer, “Don’t let blindness keep us in Iraq quagmire.” I wish to ask her these questions: 1. Do you propose an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq? 2. Are you willing to accept an aftermath of civil war and widespread sectarian genocide in Iraq? 3. Are you willing to accept an obvious Iranian dominance of Iraq and the Middle East? 4. Are you willing to accept a resurgence of al-Qaida in Iraq? 5. Are you familiar with Hezbollah and Hamas, both Iranian surrogates of terrorism against U.S. interests in the Middle East? 6. Are you aware of the success of the surge and the reforms presently taking place within the Iraqi government? 7. Do you really believe al-Qaida is as strong as it was when it first attacked the U.S. since the U.S. has not had another attack on its shores in almost seven years and al-Qaida has been defeated in Iraq?

July 4

It’s 12:15 a.m. on July Fourth. I turn on the water in Sierra Vista Mobile Home Village and RV Park to brush my teeth. Air comes out of the faucet for the umpteenth time in as many years, and always on a weekend, often on a holiday weekend. Does the owner care, after the west fence is open, two- and three-bedroom homes have moved in on a large new addition, but no new well was drilled. Water flows constantly from a fake cactus in a circle drive, only to evaporate millions of gallons, along with an uncovered pool, over the years. Lights shine at night into only the sky, disorienting migrating birds, bees, bats and butterflies, and polluting the dark skies for astronomers seeking vital data about the universe. The lot rent will surely soon be raised for the residents to pay and the owner to    profit.

I concur wholeheartedly with Art Philip’s July 4 letter, “Spanish should be taken off election materials.” It is crystal clear in the U.S. Constitution that a person must be able to read, write, and understand English in order to become a citizen. With Spanish on pamphlets and ballots, my gut feeling tells me that there is massive illegal voting in states where there are large populations of non-citizen Hispanics — especially, with the easy capability of mailing in ballots or voting by computer. If you notice, the Democratic Party favors pamphlets and ballots in Spanish. The Democratic Party also favors amnesty for illegal immigrants, together with a path to citizenship. It seems reasonable to conclude that such amnesty will increase future membership in the Democratic Party. It also seems reasonable to conclude that any illegal voting on the part of some 20 million illegal immigrants now living in the U.S. benefits the Democratic Party.

" Kyle, we already have strategic assets in range of missles. That's why we've invested in anti-missle technology and counter battery technology so we can pinpoint launch sites and destroy them. Missle have a small effective blast radius so the likelyhood that a missle will do much damage to strategic assets is unlikely. Bunkers, anti-missle batteries and counter batteries lower the risk even further. Any attempt by Iran to take the offense will result in a devastating retaliation and international sanctions and condemnation. Missles are a terror weapon at best against a civilian populated area like a city. "

Kyle wrote on Jul 20, 2008 6:42 AM:

" Placing strategic assets in range of missles is a bad idea. What happens if Iran decides to launch an attack before the "bombers" get off the ground? You just lost the immediate advantage. Why would you want to set yourself up for failure like that? It is nearsightedness like that that looses wars. "

" "Kyle" we have bombers in Qatar today, I don't think they have been in danger of missile strikes yet. We also have Patriot anti-missile batteries all over SWA. I'm not sure what you are concerned about. "

Kyle wrote on Jul 19, 2008 5:50 AM:

" Ok hmmm now we at least know you are living n the past. You can't fight every new war like old wars were thought. Putting your strategic fighters in the line of fire of Iranian misles equals nothing short of a strategic mistake. Are you that near sighted that you can't grasp that concept? Why do you think most strategi bombers are located in the US? They don't need to be forward deployed to be effective. This a common sense test that you have failed. "

hmmm wrote on Jul 18, 2008 9:39 PM:

" "Kyle", if Iran fires missiles at Iraq/Afghanistan then they provoke a war that will justify the entire region to join in against them...just like when Iraq invaded Kuwait. They also invite sanctions and rebukes from the international community. Iran also knows that will give the US the justification to retaliate and destroy their nuclear power plants and other military targets. Iran will be contained just like Russia was contained during the cold war. It's called détente and it works well. "Winston...Billy", I'll leave you to your dungeons and dragons, you sound like you're having fun over there. "

" No, "Winston", I believe that is your fanasty. I wouldn't dream of using only 150,000 men. I think our Army is too small as it is. Actually I think just having our troops stationed in Iraq is enough to deter any war from happening, but if we had to attack, attacking from Iraq would be the easiest and less costly in terms of lives and dollars. Having our troops in Iraq and Afghanistan places all the pressure we need on Iran to keep them in check and keep them from exporting their Hezballah style terrorism around the region. "

The same Army that ran in fear when we came across their border twice? The same Army that was equipt with outdated Soviet weapons and armor? The same Army that had to take all of it's directions from one man (mad-man) to act in the face of battle? What crock are you referring to? "

" Kyle, take a map of Iran. Look at where all of the nuclear sites, the oil fields, sea ports, naval bases and the strategic missile sites are located. From Iraq, the US is in a perfect position to strike Iran's strategic and economic centers much easier then from Afghanistan. Seizing ports, oil fields and nuclear energy sites along the west coast of the Arabian Gulf would cripple Iran's ability to retaliate in the gulf. Strategic bombing missions from both Afghanistan and Iraq would paralyze Tehran. Striking quickly would not be possible without strategic bases in Iraq. Open your eyes. "

hmmm wrote on Jul 16, 2008 6:32 PM:

" Wow, "Kyle" I believe it was Jimmy Carter who was in office during the hostage crisis. It was a factor in his landslide loss to Reagan in 1980. As "Joe McD" accurately pointed out, Reagan was just taking his Oath of Office when Iran released the hostages. Strategically, Iraq is easier to conquer than Iran because of the terrain, and they type of weapons our Army is equipped with. Iran would be a much harder country to attack because of the mountainous terrain. "

" Actually Reagan said we WOULD Take action when he got into office, if there was no release. Iran waited til he was taking office to release the hostages. I would say they believed him. Which is exactly how we should have handled this war. Bomb them all til we make believers out of them. Make it so bad that they drag there terrorists to us and say 'please take them, just stop the war'. Had we done this we wouldn't all be arguing on this board now. GW discipline his own kids, but we should trust his wartactics? "

Joe McD wrote on Jul 16, 2008 11:12 AM:

" To Kyle: Maybe you need to revisit history... President Reagan had precious little to do with the hostages release in Iran in 1981. The hostages were released as President Reagan was taking his Oath of Office on Inauguration Day (January 20th), 1981. The timing of this release was engineered by the Iranian terrorists as a way to embarass President Jimmy Carter as he was being replaced in office. "

I know that we're supposed to trust NBC/CBS/ABC, the problem is, they are so biased, and have shown (as in Y2k, Alar Scare, Ozone Hole and the exploding GMC Pickup) they cant be trusted either. "

If king bush had any manhood he would have attacked Iran and not Iraq. They have always been the bigger threat. Regean got on his knees and begged them for the hostages release.

What a role model you republican'ts have. "

It's political satire, nothing more nothing less. "

But Cory, who's being too ingornant to understand Strategy? "disgusted", I know many Iraqi's and they are truely a great culture. The US was negotiating a Status of Forces Agreement until recently.
