July 3
Ain’t got no money, no gas, no hope, no home. Golly gee, ain’t I poor? Suffice it to say it makes me sore at the hard-boiled Republicans. They don’t listen so what am I blathering for? McCain is pitching the same old, same old. But this is an alternative, a chance for a change and hope, from the candidate with a funny name. A better life for all, that’s his aim, especially for the little guy, medically, financially, and relief for the troops. If you truly care, give Obama a try.
I like the title of Leone Wilkerson’s letter, “We cannot continue the old way of thinking.” For example, Democrats should honor their promise of 2006 and stop the political corruption of earmarks in the Congress they now control. Earmarks originate in Congress, are attached to bills without debate, and are nothing more than pork barrel spending on needless pet projects that continue to drain our tax dollars and inflate our national debt. Also, Democrats should stop stonewalling the drilling of offshore and ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) oil and the building of more nuclear energy plants and oil refineries as they have done for the past 35 years so that we are no longer dependent on foreign oil. If Democrats had done the above, people wouldn’t be “struggling every day to find enough money to buy gas, put food on the table and pay bills.”

In regards to the wonderful performance by Michael Grande at the Arizona Folklore Preserve last Sunday, I have a couple of questions for Richard Zeller who thinks he has “The Last Word.” Does a standing ovation for an encore say it’s time to quit? Does applause and laughter signify one is bored? Does either suggest that he should shorten his performances? I suggest that if Richard Zeller is bored, he is always free to leave at any time. We are honored to have had the privilege to enjoy such a talented performer here in Sierra Vista.
A local restaurant has sent an invite to dine with them to everyone in this nearby mobile home village. Will we be lured by increasing weekly discounts if we eat there weekly this month? I’m trying to give my coupon away. No takers. The tables are jammed too close together, and the food is so salty you’re up drinking water all night. Not only is the food too salty, but it’s full of sugar. Whoever decided to put sugar in meat and sauces needs to think again about the pancreas that says no to added sugar. Plenty of natural sweeteners are in fruits and whole grains and even some veggies. In fewer than 150 words, como yo en casa, gracias. (I eat at home, thank you.)
Never thought I’d see the day when I paid $3.49 for a loaf of bread. Is that a bargain when gas is $3.94 and climbing? Forget that tiny and shrinking nine above the dollar price. There are people who think they’re saving a dollar instead of paying another penny per gallon for gasoline when that nine is so small you can barely see it. It ain’t goin’ nowhere tho’. Stay tuned. You’ll see the big news first in the Herald/Review, and no I don’t work there.
Here’s a little something that is a little sad. Elvis Presley’s daughter has said she has not granted permission to use her father’s song (“Viva Las Vegas”) in Viagra commercials. Apparently the rights to the song are up to someone else — authorship or something — yet she is the sole, blood descendant of Elvis! Yet they persist. Amazing. Perhaps there is no legal recourse, yet every time they use that music there are probably many people who might place Elvis “in bed with just anyone.” Not too nice. Perhaps the rights to the music are somewhere else, but his “sole, blood descendant” has requested a little sensitivity. Are we that far away from caring about responsible communication and responsible conduct?
I read with interest the letter by Stephanie L. Koppenafer, “Don’t let blindness keep us in Iraq quagmire.” I wish to ask her these questions: 1. Do you propose an immediate troop withdrawal from Iraq? 2. Are you willing to accept an aftermath of civil war and widespread sectarian genocide in Iraq? 3. Are you willing to accept an obvious Iranian dominance of Iraq and the Middle East? 4. Are you willing to accept a resurgence of al-Qaida in Iraq? 5. Are you familiar with Hezbollah and Hamas, both Iranian surrogates of terrorism against U.S. interests in the Middle East? 6. Are you aware of the success of the surge and the reforms presently taking place within the Iraqi government? 7. Do you really believe al-Qaida is as strong as it was when it first attacked the U.S. since the U.S. has not had another attack on its shores in almost seven years and al-Qaida has been defeated in Iraq?
July 4
It’s 12:15 a.m. on July Fourth. I turn on the water in Sierra Vista Mobile Home Village and RV Park to brush my teeth. Air comes out of the faucet for the umpteenth time in as many years, and always on a weekend, often on a holiday weekend. Does the owner care, after the west fence is open, two- and three-bedroom homes have moved in on a large new addition, but no new well was drilled. Water flows constantly from a fake cactus in a circle drive, only to evaporate millions of gallons, along with an uncovered pool, over the years. Lights shine at night into only the sky, disorienting migrating birds, bees, bats and butterflies, and polluting the dark skies for astronomers seeking vital data about the universe. The lot rent will surely soon be raised for the residents to pay and the owner to profit.
I concur wholeheartedly with Art Philip’s July 4 letter, “Spanish should be taken off election materials.” It is crystal clear in the U.S. Constitution that a person must be able to read, write, and understand English in order to become a citizen. With Spanish on pamphlets and ballots, my gut feeling tells me that there is massive illegal voting in states where there are large populations of non-citizen Hispanics — especially, with the easy capability of mailing in ballots or voting by computer. If you notice, the Democratic Party favors pamphlets and ballots in Spanish. The Democratic Party also favors amnesty for illegal immigrants, together with a path to citizenship. It seems reasonable to conclude that such amnesty will increase future membership in the Democratic Party. It also seems reasonable to conclude that any illegal voting on the part of some 20 million illegal immigrants now living in the U.S. benefits the Democratic Party.
