Special Concert

The Arizona Folklore Preserve, in partnership with the University of Arizona South, presents Dolan

Ellis, Arizona’s official state balladeer, with a program entitled “Independence Day: Arizona Style,”

at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Although Arizona became a state 136 years after 1776, Independence Day is a big holiday for us.

We are a diverse population, and we place a high value on freedom and individualism. The AFP is a great place to celebrate

that freedom. Ellis has put together a show designed to bring out the pride and patriotism in us all. He sings a very special

version of “America the Beautiful,” which begins and ends with the words inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. His song “Keeper of the Town” is about the ghost town of Sunnyside, about which there is a wonderful folk tale of a Fourth of July celebration around the turn of the century. Ellis will also sing his original, “Amerizona,” inspired by an Arizona Highways magazine issue with photographs, taken in Arizona, to represent each of the 50 states: “God bless Amerizona, a little itty bitty USA.” Recently, the History Channel produced 50 short documentaries, one about each of the states (“The States”) and asked Ellis to appear and to sing “Amerizona,” along with another of his originals, “He Called It Tombstone.”

Ellis will round out the program with songs about summer in Arizona. One possible choice is “Wildfire,” inspired by the Rodeo-Chediski Fire of 2002, the worst forest fire in Arizona history. He also may include a fairly new song, “I’m Home,” which is rapidly becoming a favorite among his fans. Learn more about Ellis by visiting his Web site, www.dolanellis.net.

This concert marks the end of the 2007-2008 season for the Arizona Folklore Preserve. Ellis will open the 2008-2009 season on Aug. 23-24 with his special concert entitled “The Arizona Way.” For reservations, call 378-6165, or e-mail to reservations@arizonafolklore.com Admission is $15 for adults and $6 for children 17 and under. To get there, go six miles south of Sierra Vista on Highway 92 to Ramsey Canyon Road, turn right, drive 3.5 miles into the canyon, and watch for the AFP entrance to the left.
