With all our off-shore oil (including the continental shelf), ANWR oil, and our huge oil-shale deposits, we have more oil capacity than all the Middle East oil producers put together. Democrats in Washington need to stop stonewalling and allow this additional oil to be drilled and mined. Democrats also need to stop stonewalling the building of more nuclear energy plants and oil refineries. In addition, we need to increase our natural gas, wind, solar, and biofuel energy — plus continue to develop the liquefication of our enormous coal deposits to produce petroleum. Will this bring down gas prices in the immediate future? By no means, for it will take many years for us to become energy-independent. Let’s get started. We can tackle this challenge. Congress needs to get off its butt and stop being an obstacle course.
Obama is not a Muslim or a Muslim sympathizer. Obama does say the Pledge of Allegiance. Rumors you read or heard of him not doing so are false. The Rev. Wright is not a racist, although he holds some pretty wrongheaded views, probably not unlike someone in your family or circle of friends. I will agree that Barack was off-base using the word “typical” in describing white women. However, do you really want four more years of another Bush and his failed policies, manufacturing jobs being shipped overseas, skyrocketing health-care costs and stagnant wages, a never-ending deficit that is in the trillions, or being stuck in a country where we cannot win? That’s exactly what McCain will give us.
To the owners who have dogs in the area of Calle Verona and Calle Ladero, if you’re going to own an animal you should control that animal when that animal barks and keeps everybody awake at night, the whole neighborhood. You should have more consideration for other people than to leave the animal outside, constantly loud barking for hours upon hours. It caused our own puppy in the house to bark and growl and it must have bothered the neighbors who live next to you terribly. Have more consideration for people especially when it’s past midnight. Either you are not home and don’t care or you are home and you don’t care. If you’re going to have an animal take care of that animal. There’s something wrong when they consistently bark like that. Give them food and water or do something.

McCain should resign? I don’t think so. Why do you think there are majority/minority leaders and majority/minority whips in both houses of Congress? If a vote is near being 50-50, it is the responsibility of these positions to know such and to alert members of their respective parties of such. If you really wish to examine the resolve of a candidate’s current status — you might harken back to Sen. Bob Dole who resigned to seek office. It’s pretty much the same as abandoning one’s post in times of war. Also, could you please refrain from using the “we” when stating positions? I’m fairly certain that you folks probably discuss positions. But could you please (quite often) state “editorial board” instead of the “we”? It looks dishonest.
I have been trying for a couple of weeks to find some kind of a Fourth of July outfit for my little dog. I know others were trying to do the same thing for their animal. I was just wondering why almost every store that we called, no one had anything, and no one expected anything, and that was even the pet stores. It seems at holidays there would be a few things. Maybe there’s not a big enough demand for it, and the stores would lose money ordering these kinds of items. But it puts the buyers at a disadvantage. I did go online and find some outfits, but they cost two to three times as much as they would here in town.

To all you readers, complainers of the action of the president of the United States, listen up. A president is not much more than a figurehead. He can’t be totally be blamed or accept full credit for what happens in this country. Our elected congressional officials are responsible, and as long as we allow them to stay there, we are responsible. So folks, get up off your duffs when November rolls around and go vote to let your voice be heard.
I’m looking in today’s newspaper for my favorite comic “Zits” and it’s not in the comic section. Can you tell me why it’s not there?
EDITOR’S NOTE: We regret human error during production caused that omission. We printed the comic in the next day as a correction.
Your recent editorial regarding the present truce between Israel and the Palestinian Authority is right on. Whatever can be done to encourage this is a plus for sure.
I want to caution everyone to check with people they send greeting cards to, to make sure they have received them. I have had five instances since December where mine were not received. They were all mailed inside the Sierra Vista post office, not the drop box. The supervisor gave me numbers to call in Tucson, and all they did was give me the run-around and refer me back to the Sierra Vista post office. They just keep telling me I should not send cash through the mail. Duh! One card had a $50 gift card, which the post office will not insure. One card had a $20 bill for grandson’s birthday. Two cards had $1 bill for grandsons, just because. One card had a $20 check for grandson, which has never been cashed. My little grandsons always have enjoyed getting $1 in a card. Guess Grandma can’t do that anymore.

We moved here a few years ago and have enjoyed going to watch the fireworks at the ball field each July Fourth. I have to admit I did not know that the Rotary group and other contributors paid for them. I thought the city paid for them. I heard how much they spend each year and hope that people coming to the ball field really try to contribute to the fund that pays for them so that we can have as great a show every year. Thanks Rotary and others who help.
The city of Sierra Vista is taxing food. A few years ago, Arizonans voted no tax on food but gave the cities the prerogative to tax. I don’t think they need it, the way they waste dollars. Let’s start with City Hall and the police department, driving around in their gas hog Crown Victorias. Then there are the city buses, which follow each other around town with not enough passengers. Mini-vans could do the job at less cost and would be more gas efficient. Then there is the fire department. I really don’t like to get on them, but driving around town on non-emergency trips, with the chief driving a huge SUV, give me a break. The only really efficient departments are parks and recreation and public works.
I just got another unrequested fax for a dream vacation to Orlando for $299. I’ve had them before for as low as $99. Apparently law enforcement can’t keep up with these scam artists. If you get an unsolicited fax that’s going to give you a great deal on vacations, airline flights, cruises, health and dental insurance, it’s a scam. Go ahead, send your money and kiss it goodbye on the way.
This is an “atta girl (or person)” to the lady in the Wal-Mart parking lot today about 8:53 a.m. driving a silver Toyota Corolla. She put her shopping cart in the shopping cart corral and actually pushed it all the way in, which is above and beyond the call. Thank you, ma’am. I wish more people would do that, even if they got just close rather than leave them in the parking spaces. Thanks.
I see in both letters to the editor and OYM that the creationists vs. evolutionists are at each other again, each trying to explain why their view is right and furnish to them obvious support from Einstein to the Bible. Sadly, you can’t explain the unexplainable. Some questions simply have no answers. It was meant to be that way. If we could empirically prove God exists what would be the point? It would be an experiment in a science class. True belief requires an act of faith. That’s what defines it; that’s what makes it important.
