I enjoy taking my children out in the evenings to play at the local parks, but with the way my schedule is during the day and getting home and getting the family ready for dinner it is past 7 p.m. I know when I take my kids to the park in the Fall or Winter, we tend to go in the afternoon when there is still some warmth, but in spring and summer we want to take advantage of the coolness and watching a sunset or stargazing while the kids have something to do. I have pretty much found this with the park on Seventh St. and BST, the additions and remodeling they have done to that park are wonderful, I think there is only one thing missing. Children love to play on the two new play sets, but there is no light anywhere near the area. My kids are old enough that I can walk the track while they play, it works out like that for a lot of people, but it would be great if they could see what they were doing and if I could see what was going on.

Here we go again. Mr. Vega’s column today announced the 4th of July festivities. There was nary a mention of the Independence Day celebration. Maybe we should just move Independence Day to the first Friday in July annually and give it back its reason for celebration. Mr. Vega, do you still send out those Dec. 25th cards?
I just read the On Your Mind comment about the woman complaining about men drivers on Highway 92. Men just don’t seem to understand cell phones. I was stopped at a red light, and it turned green for my direction. I didn’t go because I was on the cell. The man behind me honked a long time. I held the phone out the window so he could see why I wasn’t moving, but he insisted on honking even more. Keep your britches on, guys. That’s why they made cell phones.
Because I don’t know the gentleman’s name, I hope to thank him this way, if possible. On Father’s Day, my friend, her son and I went to breakfast at Ivey’s. Her son was hungry and because it was busy, it took a while for the food. We tried to talk to him and keep him busy so as not to bother others. The man next to us spoke with us, smiled and answered all the questions that a child can ask. He seemed so pleased to be sitting there. Others may have moved or tried to ignore us. When he left, we wished him a Happy Father’s Day, and he wished us a nice day as well. Not until we were ready to leave did we find out that he paid for our breakfast. Because we didn’t know him (although he did say he was from Sonoita), we want to thank him for not only the breakfast but his conversation and kindness.

Every time you open up the OYM column somebody is calling in to complain that somebody should be doing something. Guess what? You are the somebody. This is about the person complaining about the trash, trees, and shrubs east of Fry on Highway 90. Why don’t you get off of your high horse, get some trash bags, and clean something up yourself? There is plenty of trash and garbage to go around for everybody to get involved. Or why don’t you join one of the adopt-a-highway programs and organize a cleanup yourself? Maybe you can’t physically get the trees and shrubs yourself. But I can guarantee you from my first-hand knowledge of purchasing trash bags for my own cleanup that you can get the trash cleaned up. But no. You call OYM and assign it to somebody else. What a do-nothing mentality.
It’s ironic that John McCain wants to give permanent tax cuts to the oil companies as well as to the super rich in this country considering the fact that both he and his wife are multi-millionaires. I can understand why he wants to give permanent tax breaks to the super wealthy. As far as Sen. Obama, he might not be the best one for president but surely John McCain is the worst.
I believe the disservice and the inhumane treatment that we are giving to our soldiers and all our troops both men and women coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan is a national disgrace to the White House, to Washington, to the Pentagon, to the country, and especially to the Veteran’s Administration. We read in the newspapers as well as on television all the horror stories. It’s an atrocity what we are doing to our own soldiers. It’s another example of what happened when our troops came back from Vietnam, diseases from Agent Orange, etc. Our troops should receive first class treatment and full benefits as well as their families. They shouldn’t have to wait a year or two to receive benefits. The VA needs a complete overhaul.
At the June 17 retirement dinner of Fort Huachuca Deputy Garrison Commander Jim Chambers, I was surprised not to see a reporter from the Herald/Review. Where was Bill Hess? Mr. Chambers has served our country as active-duty military and a civil servant for the past 53 years, 37 of those years were for this community and Fort Huachuca. He deserves to be recognized and honored by our hometown newspaper, to say the least. What gives? Please balance your newspaper coverage. For the past few months, I have seen pictures and more pictures of Maj. Gen. John Custer on your front page, middle pages, etc. Is this the Custer Herald or the Sierra Vista Herald?
EDITOR’S NOTE: Herald/Review senior reporter Bill Hess received an invitation to Chambers’ dinner. He accepted the invitation, paid for it out of his own funds, but became ill on the day of the event and was unable to attend. The Herald/Review published a story written by Hess about Chambers’ retirement on June 3 which was published on June 4, as well as Managing Editor Keith Allen writing a laudatory editorial about Chambers.
Reference the letter in Wednesday’s paper about federal retirees not getting the stimulus payment. I am a Fed retiree and I got the stimulus. But seeing as I also get Social Security, then I thought maybe the letter writer might be correct. I contacted a couple of people I know who are fed retirees and not getting Social Security. They both got the stimulus payment. Maybe the reason that they did not get the stimulus package was because they made too much money. I know ours was reduced.
The driver of the white Cadillac Escalade, thank you for your courtesy at the driveway leaving the Fry’s parking lot. By swinging into the left turn lane then cutting back in front of the right turn lane at the street cutting off two cars waiting to make a right turn was very ingenious. We didn’t mind waiting for you to get into the busy traffic on 90. Our time isn’t as important as your’s obviously. Too bad you made it into the street unscathed. Perhaps next time SVPD will be near enough to see you and help you with your budget by giving you a citation.
About your editorial on trash pick up. A number of years ago we were living in Phoenix. My son was a member of the Boy Scout Troop there. The troop decided to perform a civic outing by cleaning up some of the trash along the shore of Lake Pleasant. I and some of the fathers accompanied the scouts. We cleaned probably most of two miles of beach over Saturday and Sunday and ended up with two pick up truck loads of debris from old tires, broken camping equipment and even household appliances, plus a good amount of aluminum cans. On Monday, the drivers sold the aluminum cans and took the trash to the county land fill. The county charged a tipping fee in excess of the amount received for the cans. This is how the county awarded the scouts for doing their job of cleaning up the park. Needless to say, recruiting helpers for civic projects became much harder, If you expect to get enthusiastic volunteers, you had better get a firm proposal of what is expected and what if any the rewards will be.
