George Bush is campaigning in Phoenix for McCain when he is not even wanted. Meanwhile tornadoes, fires, floods and every other type of natural disasters are devastating the country. The war in Iraq is chaotic and a disgrace. It’s a shame what we are doing to that country, like what we did in Vietnam. The economy is a total shambles. We’re exporting jobs overseas and we’re told it’s good for the economy. It sort of reminds me of Roman history when Nero fiddled while Rome burned. George Bush is doing the same thing with this country.

This is in response to the May 17 call about the special needs children in the mall. I believe this was called in because the students were taken into Victoria’s Secret, not just any store. Going to Victoria’s Secret is not a viable outing. If I was a betting person I would say that one of the adults that took the children into the store called in this original call. Does that mean that Buena High School investigated? Yeah. When you are wrong, you’re wrong.

Barack Obama’s foreign policy advisers appear to have taught him in his “on-the-stump” training program some basic fundamentals in foreign affairs. Obama finally realizes he can’t pull troops out of Iraq immediately without causing massive chaos and genocide? Who knows, he may even shed his naïveté and come to the realization that a U.S. president shouldn’t personally meet with a terrorist nation or group without pre-conditions. Obama appears to change his positions from one day to the next. For example, one day he says Iran is not a serious threat and the next day he says Iran is a grave threat. Yes, this man actually wants to be a commander-in-chief! We are witnessing the quintessential politician, changing positions according to which way the wind is blowing. His inexperience is showing. Time is unmasking the real Obama.
I am sorry the Herald/Review decided to edit Chuck DeLeal’s comment read to the County Board of Supervisors. I would have liked to have read the complete comment. I, like Mr. DeLeal, also wonder what is going on?
Editor’s note: The majority of the portion that was edited was DeLeal’s introduction of himself to the Cochise County Board of Supervisors. Similar information was condensed and put at the end of the column.
I have been watching the voting records of our elected officials that are published in the Herald/Review on a regular basis. I’m appalled Senator McCain has not voted on any proposed legislation in many months. Where else can someone not do their current job they were hired to do, look for another job on “company” time and get paid for the job they aren’t doing while searching for a new job? If a regular Joe tried that approach he’d be fired. I realize running for president is a time-consuming job in itself, but why is Sen. McCain still on the Senate payroll when he is clearly not doing the job we hired him to do? Any why aren’t more people upset with this picture?
I just read in today’s paper about Ideal Automotive in Sierra Vista, Huachuca City and Tucson being banned by the post. The problem is, it’s not known as Ideal in Tucson. I believe the correct name for Ideal in Tucson is Wildcat Nation. Was it explained to the young soldiers that if they need repairs they can’t take it to the Mitsubishi dealer here or to the Wildcat Nation in Tucson? It’s a little confusing.
Editor’s note: Unfortunately, the reference to the Tucson branch — Wildcat Mitsubishi — was removed in our print edition during editing. The name of the Tucson branch is Wildcat Mitsubishi.

I was very disappointed to read the three Letters to the Editor from Karen Corey’s fifth-grade class in Bisbee. It seems that another teacher has not been able to resist the temptation to teach children “What to Think” instead of guiding them as to “How to Think.”
There was a big article on Sunday about how the price of gasoline gets where it is. I read the article twice and still don’t have a clue. For those who think Bush would have fixed it by drilling in the polar region, think again, all the oil that is drilled in Alaska now is put into a tanker and sold to Japan. More drilling would only provide more gas to Japan. And, if you think the tree huggers are stopping new refineries in America think again. While they do have concerns it just isn’t going to happen because it would cut into the billions of dollars of profit being made by the oil companies. It is all controlled by the bottom line and if you are in a bind tough! We are going to have to change everything about the way we live before we can become independent from the oil companies. That includes driving everywhere for any little thing we desire to using plastics in everything. You do know that plastics are derived from petroleum don’t you? Sierra Vista is in a special bind because everything we need except water, electricity and natural gas is brought in by truck and diesel fuel is near five bucks right now so everything is going to cost more.
Editor’s note: The original story by The Associated Press on explaining gas prices ran in the May 24 edition.
I’ve been wondering what is the latest on the Dog-Cat-Mouse guy from Bisbee? There was a fire in his van? And the mouse was killed? Haven’t seen him around and was wondering. How about a follow-up story?
Editor’s note: We’ll consider doing a story.
I would like to suggest that a certain group of bicyclists donate their helmets to another person who will actually use it. I’m talking about those cyclists who ride on the narrow 2-foot-wide strip of shoulder along busy highways next to traffic going 45 mph and faster. These same cyclists seem to miss those wide, safe and taxpayer funded multi-use paths less than 10 feet from the precarious piece of highway they choose to use. So perhaps since they have nothing useful to protect by wearing a helmet, they could donate that helmet while they put themselves and others at risk by insisting upon using the highway shoulder.

Why did the Herald/Review not publish a notice for Memorial Day services at the Sierra Vista cemetery on Charleston Road? The American Legion has conducted services at this cemetery for many years. You ran a story on the times and dates for the Southern Arizona Veterans Cemetery and the Fort Huachuca Cemetery. We have many veterans buried at Cochise Memorial Gardens, too. This is not the first year this has happened. Hopefully next year you can print schedules for all the cemeteries that conduct services for Memorial Day in this area.
Editor’s note: We did not see a notice for the services at the cemetery on Charleston Road. Next year, we’d welcome notice of the event there.
The renovations at Tompkins Parks are great but there is one problem I have encountered and maybe the city can fix it while they are still working there. On the walking paths, if you are walking during the evening when it’s dark, the shorter path has no lights on it and is hard to see. Maybe they could put some solar lights along that path. The longer path that goes to the back of the park has large streets lights that shine on it, but the light from them do not reach that shorter walk- way.
I read in OYM today about the elderly lady who couldn’t get a taxi to go to the emergency room. Shame on that taxi driver. That lady was sick. He should have helped her. I know how she feels, I had an emergency yesterday and called for a taxi and she said, “Oh, we’re not running today. We might run later or tomorrow.” Shame on them. I used to feel sorry for them but I don’t anymore. It’s a joke. The one taxi in town run by a lady, she wanted to charge me double yesterday. I called Transportation Express and he came to my rescue. He helped me into the taxi, he brought me home, and he didn’t overcharge me. Shame on the rest of them. If they don’t stay in business they deserve what they get.
I was glad to read that the fort commander placed a business off limits to protect the servicemen. The Herald/Review is to be commended for an unbiased article on this. That’s more than can be said for some of the TV reporters. It reminds me of a story told by the old salts at the naval station in Virginia many years ago. Some of the businesses downtown during World War II had signs up on their lawns reading, “Sailors and Dogs Keep Off.” The admiral canceled all liberty and kept the sailors aboard the base. The town folk got the message. It’s unwise for a business or a town to underestimate the authority of the fort commander or to take advantage of young servicemen.
