BISBEE — Last weekend, the Bisbee Copper Kings played their first games of the season, taking three-out-of-four against Pacific Southwest Baseball League rival Tucson Nationals.

But that series was only an exhibition. Tonight, the regular season starts and the journey to the National Baseball Congress championships in Kansas begins with the regular season opener.

The Kings are again the home team for the weekend series at historic Warren Ballpark which will see established PSB League Casa Grande Cotton Kings visiting for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. tonight, and another doubleheader Saturday also starting at 4.

On Sunday, the Kings will muster whatever pitching verve remains for a 1 p.m. exhibition game against Davis Monthan Air Force Base.

Last season, when the Copper Kings were not an established member of the league, they played two exhibition games against Casa Grande and lost both, though they took one-run leads into the ninth innings of both contests. “They’re one of the better teams; they’ve been around a long time,” Copper Kings manager Butch Hammett said of the Casa Grande squad, which features a majority of players from Central Arizona as well as several players from Wayland Baptist University in Texas where their manager Joe Walter once played.

Hammett plans to start former Willcox High star Jason Kimzey on the mound in the first game Friday with Buena alum Tyler Johnston starting the nightcap.

Last week, the between-innings music featured songs from the 1940s. This week, the music will be from the 1950’s.

“Last week people really responded favorably to the music and we think they’ll have a good time this week, too,” Kings’ Marketing Director Mike Anderson said. “We’re trying for an atmosphere of nostalgia.”

Prior to today’s 4 p.m. game, Relay for Life will be honored with a representative throwing out the first pitch, and prior to the night game, members of the state champion Bisbee High baseball team will  do the honors.
