To the person who is so hung up on this “no God” business. It might do a little bit of good if you took your blinders off. I’m not talking about religion. If you’d educate yourself a little bit, for instance, there’s an interesting book out called, “The Reason for God” by Timothy Keller. If you are not afraid to do it, read it through. You’d probably learn something very worthwhile that would enhance your life.

Sunday’s paper, May 18, had a lot to say about water and water conservation. There’s been much written and talked about saving the San Pedro. I haven’t heard or seen anything about it. Isn’t it true that if the Mexicans decide that they need more water for their operation in Cananea they can build another dam and cut off water flow to the San Pedro? I think all plans, and their intentions, should taken into consideration.
Why didn’t you report on the awards assembly held at Bisbee High School last Thursday? All the awards, honors and scholarships bestowed upon the deserving students are a big deal in our little town. Maybe you should remove the Bisbee Daily Review banner from your newspaper.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Unfortunately, this year we did not cover the awards assembly at Bisbee High School and other local high schools. However, if there is information that can be provided about honors local students received, we’re willing to run the information. Please send it to Sierra Vista Herald, 102 Fab Ave., Sierra Vista AZ 85635, or by e-mail to svhnews@transedge.com.
Do you know what happened this week back in 1850, 158 years ago? California became a state. The state had no electricity. The state had no money. Almost everyone spoke Spanish. There were gunfights in the streets.
I’d like to respond to the statement that George Bush has nothing to do with gas prices going up, that they didn‘t go up until the Democrats took over the House. Where have you been for the last eight years? Gas prices went up 10 cents the first month Bush took office in 2000. That’s a fact. I monitored it. Get your facts straight folks.
This is to the person who wrote about the “man in the sky.” Well, you better start praying because you’re going to meet that man some time and he’s going to be the one who decides where you go.
To the OYM caller who talked about that mental health agency that’s run by the mentally unstable. It must have been the one day out of the year that they had a good day. Unfortunately for you, you don’t work for someone suffering with a mental illness and don’t suffer the abuse. So, come back and visit that agency again. Just sit down and observe. Maybe you’d have a different view. Maybe if you worked there you’d have a different view.

We must abolish the Electoral College now. It’s an antiquated and rusty system that doesn’t work. It only serves the political powers that be right now. The popular vote is the one that needs to count. The electorates don’t even need to vote the way their state tells them to. They can do whatever they want. It needs to be abolished.
Sure happy old Big Brown didn’t break a leg in the Kentucky Derby the other day. If ever there was a personification of “animal cruelty” just watch the Kentucky Derby. That is the absolute epitome of animal cruelty; all of those filthy rich dudes indulging in their “sport”, that of horse-racing at the expense of the poor animals being raced before they are properly physically developed. Our animal cruelty laws should apply to horse racing as well as all else. Talk to any knowledgeable horse person. You will learn racing 3-year-olds is far too young. They shouldn’t be raced before 4 years of age, and preferably 5 years. I’m sure it’s not going to happen as long as these greedy billionaire “sickos” go only for the bottom line. Very sad.
Of all those who deliver the news via radio, TV, newspapers, etc., the use of our language should be explicit and proper. Of late, I hear the word “woken” being used frequently. So, I checked several dictionaries and there is no such word. I don’t remember my English conjugations very well, but it seems that “woke, woke, and awaken” was reasonably proper. I’m sure English majors will keelhaul me. I can assure you “there ain’t no such word” in our vocabulary. Instead of “woken up” try “I was awakened”, for example.
I live about one-half mile from Sierra Vista city limits. I’m not able to drive. I was sick this morning and needed to go to the emergency room at the hospital. I called for a taxi and was told if they were not too busy they could send out a cab to pick me up. I asked, does that mean you cannot guarantee that you can send a cab and he said, yes, that’s right. I was not able to get a ride to the emergency room from this company.
I don’t wish ill on anyone but Sen. Ted Kennedy’s recent diagnosis of brain cancer is an opportunity for him to show his faith in the Canadian system of health care. I recommend he go to and have treatment there the way Canadian citizens would. First of all he probably wouldn’t have been diagnosed by now. He’d probably pass away before he began any treatment. The Canadian system is free. It’s just not available when you need it.
Someone on Mustang Heights Road in Whetstone has been feeding the javelina and putting them at risk for death (shot and killed). They are now ravaging our gardens and eating everything. Feeding javelina is illegal, so cut it out and extend their life spans before we kill them. Also three of our phone blocks at the corner have been vandalized, probably by kids, so will they sit with wires hanging out much longer?
It’s amazing to watch the unwieldy, convoluted process Democrats go through to choose a presidential nominee. Now we are witnessing “backroom” politicians, under the guise of superdelegates, override the role of primaries and pick Barack Obama as their nominee. Simultaneously, the mainstream media is sitting on the sidelines clapping hands while the democratic process is bastardized. Isn’t it ironic, that if Democrats had employed the normal simplified process Republicans used to choose John McCain, namely, winner-takes-all delegates in each state primary, Hillary Clinton would now be the undeniable Democratic presidential nominee? And there would have been no “backroom” politicians to corrupt the democratic process.
Road rant No. 212: Let’s say you’re headed northwest on Buffalo Soldier approaching Coronado and you’re going to turn right onto Coronado. You pull into the right-turn lane. The light turns red just as you approach, giving a green light to Coronado, which starts emptying its traffic either one way or the other onto Buffalo. Because there is no right-turn arrow, you have to come to a full stop before making your right turn. Who are you stopping for? There is no approaching traffic from any direction! Would it be too much to ask for the traffic engineers to install a green right-turn arrow here?
I am waiting for the day when I see the Herald publish the monthly water usage of Sierra Vista. It would be more understandable broken up into neighborhoods so we know who to point the finger at. You know, like you point your finger every month at Fort Huachuca and publish our water usage. It seems to me that the people who support you and give you the right to use all the water you desire should have a little less examination by the public. I will continue to take all the baths I want to and wash all the clothes and dishes that I desire — even if I do live on the fort. Maybe you guys need to get a life.
EDITOR’S NOTE: One of the issues with monthly water figures is that Sierra Vista is served by private companies, not a public utility. Fort Huachuca is a government facility, and, as such, is subject to the Freedom of Information Act. The fort, however, provides the information on a monthly basis. Private companies are not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. If you want to look at local water information, the city of Sierra Vista ’s water Web site — www.sierravistawater.com — may provide you further information. We’ll also investigate other water usage information ideas.

Columnist William Safire reminded us that punny or not, word of the pun’s death seems greatly exaggerated. He wrote “There’s no more chance of stamping out paronomasia than there is a likelihood of finding a cure for the common cold.”
