Sports Wizard

1. Annika Sorenstam announced Tuesday she is retiring at the end of the year. Is she the greatest female athlete of all time?

Absolutely not. It seems to me that whenever a great retires, people want to immediately saint them and make them the all-time best at everything. Annika was not even the best female golfer of all time, let alone the best female athlete ever. The Sports Wizard says that title belongs to Cheryl Miller.

2. Who should the Suns hire to replace D’Antoni?

Wally Backman! No, wait...

How about Dennis Rodman? Every team needs an over the hill has-been with bad knees who is out of shape to lead a team to glory. Yes, I know, we already have Shaq for that, but he doesn’t look as good in a wedding dress.

3. Will the Diamondbacks lead the NL West the rest of the season?

Probably not the entire season, but they will finish the year on top, and the final day of the season is the only day that really matters.

Yes, the D-backs hit a slump against the Mets, Phillies, and Cubs, and yet even after being swept by Chicago on the road, they started this abysmal stretch of play with a 4 game lead, and finished it with a 3.5 game lead.

Not too shabby, and it shows how much the D-Backs pitching staff could feast upon this division's weak hitting.

1. Annika Sorenstam announced Tuesday she is retiring at the end of the year. Is she the greatest female athlete of all time?

Yes.

The most dominant golfer ever because she was the first to play it like a man.

And, if she’d gotten a chance to start playing with the men earlier in her career she most certainly would have made the cut at more than one PGA event. Had that happened, she’d be a runaway choice.

2. Who should the Suns hire to replace D’Antoni?

Just promote Alvin Gentry.

In a recent Sports Illustrated story, it was reported that at a practice, Shaq told Gentry, 53, he’d buy him a Ferrari if he could dunk with no warmup. Gentry’s try came up just short, but you’ve got to like that easy flowing cameraderie and willingness to accept demeaning dares from much richer players.

3. Will the Diamondbacks lead the NL West the rest of the season?

Definitely.  Who’s going to catch them?

The Padres have the worst record and baseball, the Giants are a joke and the Dodgers’ myriad retreads are ready to hit their annual blowout midsummer.  The  only possible contender is the Rockies but they’re 8 games back and falling.
