See the Old Wild West come alive with a weekend honoring Tombstone’s most notable and legendary lawman. The annual Wyatt Earp Days celebration is scheduled for Memorial Day weekend, May 24-26. The weekend event is sponsored by the Lions Club and will feature three days of continuous, action-packed street entertainment starting at 10 a.m. and concluding at approximately 4 p.m. each day. There will be a gunfight skit competition, with reenactors from several states, and a historic-costume competition on Sunday. A chili cook-off is slated for 1 p.m. on Allen Street between Fourth and Third streets. Lions Club will sell T-shirts and other memorabilia, including chances on a replica firearm. Sierra Vista
There will be a Kids Celebrating Kids concert at 6 p.m. today in Kino Hall, St. Andrew Church, 800 Taylor Drive. The concert will honor National Foster Care Month and will feature Cochise Children’s Choir and Buena High School. Admission and desserts are free. Call Carol at 439-4850.

Major General John M. Custer will speak at a Thursday luncheon of the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA), slated for 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Windemere Hotel and Conference Center. Custer will share his perspective regarding the future of Fort Huachuca’s mission. The former director of intelligence at the headquarters of U.S. Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Fla., will outline his approach designed to gain leverage against today’s asymmetric enemy and prepare intelligence soldiers to fully support the warfighter in all dimensions of the battlefield. The association plays an active role in military personnel matters and especially proposed legislation affecting the career force, the retired community and veterans of the uniformed services.
Community forums are being held to provide information about foster parenting. There will be a forum on Thursday, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at Apache Middle School. A panel consisting of foster care staff, Child Protective Services staff and current foster parents will answer questions about becoming a foster parent. Other forums are slated for May 21, Huachuca Mountain Elementary School; and Aug. 26, Buena High School. Call 439-4850.
Rebecca Orozco, director of Cochuse College Center for Lifelong Learning, will present “Who Was in the San Pedro from 1850 to 1900 — and Why” at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at the Carr House. The Carr House is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Saturday and Sunday until October. For visitors and hikers, the historic Carr House offers maps, exhibits, information and water. Join docents from the Friends of the San Pedro River on an interpretive walk along the river May 17. The walk will depart from the San Pedro House, on Highway 90 just west of the San Pedro River, at 8 a.m. Call 459-2555.
Is your USA flag dirty, tattered, faded or otherwise less than perfect? Flag code suggests an appropriate disposal of such flags in a dignified and respectful flag retirement ceremony. Tombstone Chapter (centered in Sierra Vista) of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution has begun its annual flag collection. Flag collection boxes can be found in various churches and other public buildings around town. Curves of Sierra Vista at 714 C Wilcox Drive at Seventh Avenue has once again joined with Tombstone Chapter women in the collection of flags by being a drop-off site Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 7 a.m. to noon. NAMI Southeastern Arizona has started a nine-week Recovery Education Course, which meets Wednesdays, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the NAMI Resource Center, 77 Calle Portal, Suite A280. The peer to peer course is open to persons with mental illness who are interested in enhancing their wellness and recovery. The course includes lecture, discussion, interactive exercises and structured group processes. Topics include an overview of most common mental illnesses; understanding how symptoms affect thoughts, feelings and behavior; coping strategies; relapse prevention planning; medications and side effects; relationships and communication; addictions; co-occurring illness; spirituality; stigma and discrimination; empowerment and self-advocacy. The Volunteer Interfaith Caregiver Program (VICaP) needs volunteers. It is a nonprofit organization providing services to the elderly, disabled and homebound residents of Sierra Vista and nearby rural communities. Services include transportation to appointments, shopping assistance, friendly visiting, basic business help, respite sitting and minor home maintenance. Call 459-8146.
