MESA — Hard work throughout the entire season paid off for several track and field athletes on Friday in the preliminaries and finals of the AIA Class 2A Track and Field State Championships.

The top eight or nine qualifiers in each of Friday’s preliminary events will be in today’s finals at John D. Riggs Stadium at Mesa Community College.

Some finals were held Friday and Tombstone sophomore Cody Rosengarten was the biggest star, finishing second in the 800 and 1,600-meter runs.

In the 1,600, Rosengarten broke Justin Prevatte’s school record of 4:23.17 and narrowly missed catching Scottsdale Christian’s Isaiah Klassen, who won in a time of 4:22.75.

Rosengarten appeared to be on his way to winning the 800 but was caught late by Hopi’s Chad Baker. Baker passed Rosengarten in the last 100 meters to win by seven-hundreths of a second. Baker came in at 2:00.50 and Rosengarten finished in 2:00.57.

Also for the Tombstone boys, Thomas Smith qualified for tonight’s final in the 200 meter dash in a time of 23.3. The Yellowjacket 4x400 relay of Josh Uchimura, Josh Wills, Shawn Hector and Daniel Dotson qualified in a time of 3:40.09. The 4x100 THS relay team of Dorian Temple, Smith, Dotson and Corey Sarasnick qualified in 44.50 and individually, Dotson qualified in the 300 hurdlesain time of 43.51.

The lone Tombstone girl to qualify for Saturday’s finals was Jiovanna Mendoza, who made it into the 100 meter dash in 13.24 and the 400 in 63.36.

The Bisbee girls 4x800-meter relay team put together a sixth-place finals finish in Friday’s final. After the Lady Pumas started out in ninth place after the first 200 meters, freshman second-leg runner Alma Morales put her team in third-place position. Bryanda Yates and Paulette Yates, her older sister, kept the team in fifth- and sixth-place position next to Yuma Catholic, which finished fifth.

Valley Christian (10:15) won the event.

“I could pass by them by the first 100,” Morales said. “It’s very nice.”

Paula Yates unofficially finished sixth in the 3,200-meter final Friday.

Matt Metli, a beast of a shot put thrower, threw 54 feet to lead after Friday’s preliminaries. The next shot putter threw 51-2. Eric Olander (42-4) also qualified for today’s state finals and was seventh.

Natachia Testa (32-0 1/2”) qualified for today’s finals.

Tombstone’s Daniel Dotson (17.5) was fifth in the 100 hurdle prelims.

Nathan Manigault of Bisbee won his 100-meter dash prelim heat (11.19), which was won by a runner from Northwest Christian (11.06). Yellowjacket Thomas Smith (11.5) qualified.

Manigault also qualified in the 200 meters.

The Bisbee boys’ 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams also qualified for tonight’s finals.

Way to go, boy! You ran your butt off and showed what true courage looks like. Go get 'em today-the 3200 is yours! Go Yellowjackets! "
