May 18, 1928 - April 20, 2008

Raymond E. Geer LTC U.S. Army (Ret.) passed away Sunday, April 20, 2008, at home unexpectedly.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army from Vail, Ariz., shortly after World War II and served in a variety of cavalry and tank units for the next three decades.

After leading a tank platoon in the Korean War, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned in branch Armor. He commanded units of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment in Germany and the 34th Armor at Fort Lewis, Wash.

Next he completed the Armor Officer Advance Course and was assigned as Army Advisor to the 105th Cavalry Squadron, Wisconsin Army National Guard.

His service with Military Advisor Command Vietnam (MACV) was followed by assignment to the Weapons Department, U.S. Army Armor School, Fort Knox, Ky., where he was an instructor of tank weapons systems and small arms. Returning to Vietnam he served with the 1st Cavalry Division.

His next assignment was to the U.S Army Combat Surveillance and Electronic Warfare School at Fort Huachuca, Ariz., where he was director of the Ground Sensors Department. He continued in that capacity until the school was absorbed by the U.S. Army Intelligence School.

He retired from active duty shortly thereafter. A career as a long haul truck driver followed where he logged over one million accident-free miles at the wheel of an 18 wheeler.

In the mid 1980s he attended acting school, qualified as a member of the Screen Actors Guild and was soon working as a character actor in television, movies and commercials. His last significant roll was as President Teddy Roosevelt in the Turner Network Television production “Geronimo.”

Ray, as he liked to be called, had a long association with the Sierra Vista Chamber of Commerce in Sierra Vista, Ariz., where he worked as a volunteer in a wide variety of assignments.

Ray was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy. He is survived by his devoted, loving wife, and best friend Cheryl Ann; his mother-in-law, Betty Pickett; and his son, Cole, from his first marriage from Sierra Vista.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at the Post Cemetery in Fort Huachuca, Ariz. Those who wish to attend the service should gather at the Widowed Support Center outside the Main Gate by 9:30 a.m. The Rev. Richard Andersen will officiate.

Arrangements are by Hatfield Funeral Home.
