This is concerning the April 3 column about the bill to support Fort Huachuca schools. Those who support education in all public schools believe every school district should get the funding needed. Attracting and keeping qualified teachers is a problem throughout the United States. I have always supported Sierra Vista schools and I voted for the last override. However, since Debra Scott believes Fort Huachuca schools should not be allowed to spend their only source of funding, which is federal impact aid, and not any local taxes, I look forward to voting “no” for any future overrides and to voting against Scott when she’s up for re-election. Those who try to undermine any school district are an embarrassment. Those who help the next BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) to close the fort help to secure the economic destruction of Sierra Vista, whose taxes support Sierra Vista schools. Great way to look out for your own district and community.

After reading the newspaper today, watching the news, and realizing how many millions of dollars these candidates have, why is the American public giving them money all the time, all these fundraisers? Perhaps if it was up to the politicians to use their own money they wouldn’t start campaigning so early. The American people are really stupid to give them money year after year after year. Stop and think: What do they do for you?

(Sierra Vista) school board member Deb Scott’s whining that “If we can’t have it no one should” when talking about school spending on Fort Huachuca, sounds much more appropriate to the playground than a school board meeting. It is kind of a socialist approach to hurt the successful even if it doesn’t mean it will help the losers.
To whomever the genius was who hired the stand-up comic to work at the Shell by Cloud Nine, it’s about time. I was so tired of going to a convenience store where the clerk acts like you’re bothering them. At least this time you can have gas and a laugh. To the owner of the Shell, thanks very much.
We have one cab company called Transportation Express but like the caller said, it takes over an hour to get it and sometimes they’re so busy going to the fort they can’t pick up residents. I sure wish we could get one for the people who have to depend on a cab or bus.
A useless war. I think telling the Afghanistan farmers that they can’t grow poppies is equivalent to telling the South after the Civil War that they can’t raise cotton. To them it’s the basic background of their national economy. They just will not accept this program. The opium they grow is all they know and it will never change. It’s comparable to moving the Apache Indians to a small, sandy, rocky piece of ground telling them they must change and farm it as a way of life. The U.S. is basically the main force combating the Taliban there. The other countries are there because of past moral and political obligations to us and to keep our friendship. As the Russians found out, it’s not worth the psychological cost to our armed forces and us.

We attend a major Protestant church in SV. As usual, we were awe-inspired by the marvelous music — the best in town. The choir sang Easter music and we joined along with them in praise. When the minister of the church spoke, not once did he mention the word, Easter, the cross or the resurrection. Unbelievable. Granted we already know this beautiful account of Easter and it is nice to be refreshed again. We did not expect to hear another of his mundane sermons. What a disappointment.
I think Geraldine Ferraro, a former Democratic vice presidential candidate, had it right when she said the mainstream media is giving Barack Obama a free ride because he is black. The mainstream media has become the embodiment of political correctness. Thanks to Fox News, I learned that in 2005, according to the Chicago Tribune, Obama himself admitted he could never have won the race for his Illinois U.S. Senate seat if he had run as a white man and won solely because he ran as a black man. This lends credence to what Ferraro said. The media praises Obama as a political messiah and vilifies Ferraro as a racist. I’m not buying it. My hat’s off to Ferraro for her courage in standing up to an agenda-driven mainstream media.
I am going to attempt to respond to the rambling, inane comments of the “writer” asking for proof of evolution in OYM for March 28. I find it entertaining that you are obviously a believer in the Christian God myth, a cult of beliefs based wholly on faith with little foundation in fact whatsoever but you are asking believers of evolution for proof. I assume you believe, as the bible teaches, that the Earth is in the neighborhood of 6,000 years old. From the illiterate babble you wrote to OYM, I have no trouble imagining that you don’t have the mental faculties to understand the proof even if you had the open-mindedness to try. Do yourself a favor, go to any library or bookstore and get a geology or archeology text, there is plenty of proof regarding earthly timelines therein. Sure, you may ask why these books are more believable than the Bible; but I ask you, why is your book any more correct than mine? Why do I need to produce proof for my beliefs but you need none?
So the war in Iraq was over oil as stated by many. If that’s the case, why are our gas prices so high? I saw the picture of Charlton Heston in your newspaper with a rifle over his head. It’s a very, very old pre-Revolutionary war rifle. What if you were to take that picture and put an AK-47 in his hand? I wonder what the reaction would be.
Does anyone recall the Cuban Missile Crisis? The Russians were building missile bases in Cuba aimed at this country. We blockaded Cuba and after a game similar to “chicken” between the U.S. and Russia, the Russians backed off and removed them. We’re going to build missile bases in Poland and Czechoslovakia aimed at Russia. They’re upset. Where’s the difference? If we want to build something, build a technological wall around the U.S. We have the know-how. Also, tighten security at ports and airports. And register and trace all Islamic visitors and residents whose “good boys” just returned from the Middle East.
I was wondering what you do with the lithium bulbs after they go out, since they have mercury in them? How do you dispose of them?
Why is the Naco Border Patrol station not listed anywhere in the blue pages of the 2007 Dex/Quest telephone directory? The Naco station covers Bisbee, Tombstone and Sierra Vista county areas. There is no listing anywhere in the blue pages. This is a national security issue. Is it listed in the 2008 Dex/Quest telephone directory? Why would any Border Patrol station be left completely out of the government blue pages? Who is responsible for this deletion? It had been listed for years. At minimum Bisbee, Sierra Vista, and Tombstone should have the Naco Border Patrol station listed as their station.
Editor’s note: The Naco Port of Entry is listed on Page 47 in the “blue” pages of the current phone book under Bisbee. Phone numbers are 432-5349 or 432-3111.
Why do we have 75,000 occupation troops in Germany, 36,000 in South Korea, and many more throughout the world while we’re rotating the National Guard and our regular Army into Iraq, some for the third and fourth time?
The Herald is to be commended for its efforts in bringing an awareness of the critical issue of water conservation. An article in the February National Geographic magazine indicated the research predicts that the Southwest will have a dust bowl condition by mid-century. That could mean that by then our grandchildren and great-grandchildren will not have a sustainable environment. What a legacy Sierra Vista will be leaving for future generations. The present destruction of desert vegetation by developers with the blessing of city government will hasten that day. Why don’t the final plans from the Planning Commission include desert plants, flowers, and trees — vegetation that can sustain itself with minimum amounts of water? Not only will the city become a beautiful desert environment, but drip irrigation can also be eliminated. It’s very important that we not have those irrigation systems. They are a waste of our water supply and would not be needed if Sierra Vista would have a mandatory desert vegetation plan for the developers.
I’m calling in reference to the OYM comments about taxicabs. I own the largest taxi company in Sierra Vista. It’s called Transportation Express. The phone number is 459-7778. You can reach me at 520-249-4768 for more details.
