Around Your Town serves to inform readers of nonprofit events happening in our communities that are open to the public. Please send items to svhnews@transedge.com. Please try to submit your item two weeks in advance of the event.

Political events

There will be a Cochise County Republican Committee meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday in Tombstone, at the American Legion, 205 E. Allen St. Delegates and alternates will be elected to attend the May 10 Republican State Convention, which in turn will elect delegates and alternates to the Republican National Convention. The meeting also will nominate a national committeeman and committeewoman. Volunteers in the greater Pearce community have acquired sufficient signatures on the petitions to ensure that the Sunsites-Pearce Fire District Board election will appear on the November 2008 ballot. Signatures are still being acquired. Any person who is interested in running for the board should contact Tom Schelling at the Cochise County Elections-Special Districts Office for the paperwork. The Thunder Mountain Republican Women’s Club will meet at 11 a.m. Tuesday for lunch at the Pueblo del Sol Country Club. Roger Contreras and John Kelliher Jr., the two Republican candidates for Superior Court Judge Division 4, will speak. For reservations, call Elizabeth at 803-9356 or Alice at 378-7017.

A spaghetti fundraiser for Cochise County sheriff candidate Bill Cloud will be held April 27, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Gus’ Pizzaram in the Safeway plaza in Bisbee. Tombstone

The Tombstone High School Student Council will hold its Spring Fling festival on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the new school, 1211 Yellow Jacket Way. Various clubs will have fundraising booths and concessions. Any group that wishes to operate a fundraising booth should contact Melinda Escarcega, Student Council advisor, 457-2215, Ext. 5223, before 1 p.m. Friday.

Bisbee

A social, holistic “cuddle party” (“Kuschelparty” in Germany, where this idea was borrowed) will be held in the yoga room at Club Kilimanjahro, 33 Subway St., on April 19, 26 and May 3, from 6 to 9 p.m. This is “a structured, safe workshop on boundaries, communication, intimacy and affection,” according to cuddleparty.com. Wear comfortable clothing. Flannel pajamas are OK. Bring a blanket, pillow, scarf, snack and nonalcoholic drink. Participants don’t have to cuddle with anyone if they don’t want to. Donations will be accepted to defray the room rent. Call Marietta at 366-1842.

The Muheim Heritage House Annual Rummage, Collectible and Antique Sale will be held on April 25 and 26, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., at the house, located at 422 Arizona St., in the Warren District. Funds collected help maintain, preserve and perpetuate this historic house for future generations. Donations can be dropped off at the Muheim through April 24, from 1 to 4 p.m. For pickup of larger items, call Sam Sorich at 249-7196, Jim Burke at 236-3319, Lyle Reddy at 366-5645 or Andy Moravitz at 432-2410. Bisbee’s Earth Day will be held April 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Vista Park in the Warren District. This is also the opening day of the Bisbee Farmers Market. There will be entertainment all day: musicians, dancers and drummers. A Maypole dance in which everyone joins in will be held at mid-day. Vendors of Earth-friendly products will be there with a variety of educational booths. There will be numerous activities for all ages. Sierra Vista

Glenn Minuth will present “Earth’s Energy Balance” to the Huachuca Astronomy Club of Southeastern Arizona on Friday in Room 305 A/B of Cochise College. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. As a trained instructor on the topic, Minuth will explain how the Earth manages its annual energy budget received from the sun. Call Keith Mullen at 366-0049.

Friends of the San Pedro River will lead a bird walk near St. David on Saturday. Meet at the Holy Trinity Monastery at 7:30 a.m. for the four-mile walk. There is a $5 fee. Bring drinking water, and be prepared to get your feet wet. Proceeds support the Friends’ educational programs. Call 459-2555.

AARP Chapter 3123 will hold an all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Landmark Cafe on Saturday morning. Tickets are $2 and are available from all AARP board members. Call Sandy at 378-6238 or George at 459-2655. All proceeds help fund senior programs such as VICaP, Senior Nutrition Program and Cochise Area on Aging Caregiver Program.

The Friends of the Sierra Vista Library is continuing its Meet the Author series. Local authors Henrietta Stockel, Betty Escapule and Kelly Tighe will provide presentations and answer questions in the Mona Bishop Room at the library on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

The Sierra Vista West Rotary Club will be holding a community drive on behalf of local non-profit agencies on Saturday. The club will have a booth space at the West End Block Party, where it will be taking donations between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Items accepted at the West End Give will include nonperishable food, books, new toys and board games, elementary school supplies, backpacks and toiletry items. Anyone who brings a donation will receive a free raffle ticket, giving them the chance to win a $50 gas voucher.

The Tombstone Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, based in Sierra Vista, will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday. Saundra Engle will present “Photo Preservation through Digital Organization and Scrapbooking.” Call 439-0121.
