TUCSON — In one of the most explosive performances in the recent history of the Buena baseball program, Buena beat Tucson High, 12-3.
Due in part to work being done on Cherry Field, the Badgers’ usual home field, the game was played Saturday at Hi Corbett Field, the spring training home stadium of the Colorado Rockies.
“It was a very exciting day being a Colt,” Buena head coach Bill Wright said. “The venue was absolutely incredible. A lot of our guys have never been on a field like that.”
The Colts also clinched at least a share of the Southern Region championship, and could clinch outright with one more loss by Salpointe Catholic against either Tucson High, Casa Grande or on March 22 in Tucson against Buena.

The Colts improved to 8-2 in the Class 5A Southern Region and are 8-6 overall in games counting toward the 5A power rankings. They are 5-0 in games against 5A Southern Region Division I opponents.
If both Buena and Salpointe Catholic finish tied at 5-1 in region play, then the tiebreaker would come down to power points. As of Sunday night, the Colts were ranked 18th, just ahead of Salpointe at No. 19.
However, Buena’s win over Tucson High did not yet count and it could be among the top 16 after that’s factored in.
On Saturday, Buena hammered 18 hits, including five doubles and three triples.
“It was one of the most offensive games in the last seven years of my tenure,” Wright said. “Our guys have really been working hard over the past eight months and it’s been paying off. We’re finding the gaps.”
Taylor Stone hit three doubles and Bryce Gregory hit two doubles.
Jimmy Marciano, Miguel Trujillo and Tagg Duce each hit one triple.
Stone went 5-for-5 with four runs and three runs batted in. Gregory went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Buena starting pitcher Jacob Thomas threw a complete game. He allowed seven hits over seven innings.
