I have to take issue with some of the OYM callers who have questioned Sen. (John) McCain’s heroism. I don’t agree with the senator on a number of his stands. However, let’s get the record straight. McCain, a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, was shot down on his 23rd mission over North Vietnam. After some time, his captors discovered he was the son of the admiral who at the time was the commander of all U.S. forces in Vietnam. Because of his father’s position, he was offered repatriation. McCain said he would accept, only if his fellow POWs were repatriated as well. This was not acceptable to his captors, so John spent a total of five and half brutal years in captivity. McCain’s awards consist of the following: Silver Star, Legion of Merit for Valor, Distinguished Flying Cross, three Bronze Stars and two Purple Hearts. I would suggest you take out your disdain for people who are congenital liars who have the propensity to be delusional, or a person that has a 20-year relationship with a bigot that hates America, and has the audacity to claim that person his mentor.

Illegals and terrorists entering our country illegally should be a felony crime, so any American can stop them at gunpoint. Maybe we could have stopped 9-11 bombing by stopping those who came across the border. Anyone who helps illegals also helped in bombing on 9-11. They have neither legal court action nor rights in our country. The only reason Japan did not attack America in World War II was not because of the military but that they knew Americans had guns in each home. That’s what they were afraid of most. Let’s come together as Americans and stop the invasion and destruction of America. If we don’t fight for our country and freedom, others will take it away.

“First of all, you must understand that in the last days scoffers will come, scoffing and following their own evil desires. They will say, ‘Where is this ‘coming’ he promised? Ever since our fathers died, everything goes on as it has since the beginning of creation.’ But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the Day of Judgment and destruction of ungodly men. But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” — 2 Peter 3:3-9
I am a veteran. I would like to use the vet clinic here in SV. I fell and injured myself. I am 70-plus. I tried to see a doctor here, but they are full of snowbirds who save their medical problems for when they get down here. Why can’t they be checked out before they get on the road and possibly have trouble there? And leave our clinics open for the locals who live here? The earliest I could get in is two and a half months away. Why can’t they use the ER at the hospital? I have to because they have all the spots filled up here at the VA. I would like to return the favor and go north when it’s hot here and fill their medical facilities up (be a heatbird) and see how they like it when they cannot get med help. The VA likes this because it makes them look like they are doing a good job, when in fact they are doing us locals a poor service.
When Gabrielle Giffords tells us she favors stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, she is being disingenuous. Why? Because she is doing everything she can to tie up the building of the fence in the courts. Although most Americans want a fence to stop the invasion of illegal immigrants, Democrats do not want a fence. However, they know it would be politically unwise to say so publicly. Instead, they are favoring legislation to tie up the building of the fence in the courts, under the guise of protecting the environment and private property rights. It is pure politics on the part of Democrats. It must be remembered Democrats really welcome the invasion of illegal immigrants because it is part of their long term political strategy. They plan to award amnesty and eventual citizenship to illegal immigrants. They are counting on illegal immigrants to be future Democrats.
Comments about Senator (Barack) Obama: I’m guessing your March 24 entry about Obama’s “former” minister being a bigot, etc., was called in by a Republican. That contributor apparently has little memory of the two great Republican ministers, Falwell and Robertson, and their proclamations that 9-11 was the fault of gays and lesbians and not plotted by (Osama) bin Laden because of our air bases in the holy land of Saudi Arabia, although many times he has stated that was exactly his reason. Another March 24 entry says Obama is “only too happy to throw under the dust” his American relatives to further his career. That comment shows how little the Obama-haters actually know the true facts. He has stated publicly many times that he cares little for his Kenyan father who left him at age 2, and has nothing but love and respect for his white mother and grandmother, both Americans. Why don’t we change the political discussion to real issues and get away from this race based hatred? Remember, that type of mentality already cost this state the 1993 Super Bowl.
I would like to thank the Sierra Vista Herald for the great article on gas prices. I especially appreciate the link to the AAA gas price finder — AAAAZ.com. I encourage everybody should utilize this for the best deal on price. With prices as they are, we really need to put brand loyalty on the back burner and reward the stations that are giving us the best prices. If we can spur a little competition it will benefit everybody.

I agree with the suggestion that Sierra Vista Middle School be renamed the Joyce Clark Middle School. Mrs. Clark taught here for more than 44 years and would have continued teaching but for her untimely death. Her love of education and her dedication to her students is well known to all who knew her. Furthermore, her professional endeavors and her moral conscience have had the most profound positive impact on education in the history of this school district. Honoring her in this way would stand as a model of excellence and integrity for future generations. I strongly encourage former students, colleagues, parents, and anyone who has been touched by Joyce’s life to write or call in your support to this newspaper and contact your school board.
Back in the last year of the Clinton administration when the stock market crashed, I took a heavy hit in my retirement savings. There was no government to bail me out. I had to bite the bullet. Those people who took out adjustable-loan mortgages and cannot now pay for them, more than likely, were people who could not afford to buy a house in the first place and bought taking a great risk. Sorry, but although my sympathies are with them, I don’t think the government has any business bailing them out, just as it had no business bailing me out when my retirement savings took a heavy hit with the Clinton-era stock market crash. I’m still paying off my mortgage. Is the government going to bail me out, too? Why should I have to pay off my mortgage and those people who took out risky adjustable-loan mortgages get a government bailout? Why should I as a taxpayer have to pay for their bad decisions?
Why on Earth would someone have a dog if no one is home all day? We have neighbors who recently moved in with one very small, but very loud, barking dog. It is impossible for any of the neighbors in the adjoining properties to go outside to read, to garden, or just to enjoy the weather without this animal going absolutely berserk. Both people work all day and the dog is allowed to run between the porch and the yard, disturbing everyone in earshot. It is not fair to the neighbors, nor is it fair to the dog. But wait, they solved the problem! They acquired another dog and now leave both of them at home. Yes, they are company for each other. They are also both barking now.

The mother who brought her infant to the furniture store should realize the store has probably had children spill things and ruin furniture in the past. No one wants to deal with your children, and especially nobody wants to see you breast feed in public. I would definitely ask you to leave my store, too. Give the rest of us break from your kids. That also goes for people who think everybody wants to see you lug your dogs all over town.
Barack Obama is showing a serious character flaw — his looseness with the truth. The Columbia Journalism Review takes the mainstream media to task for giving Obama a pass on his distortion of John McCain’s statement of staying in Iraq for 100 years. In his campaign speeches Obama accuses McCain of wanting to wage a “100 year war” in Iraq, deliberately misstating what McCain actually said. Only after being publicly criticized has Obama now changed his line to McCain wanting to “keep” troops in Iraq for 100 years. Obama, however, conveniently omits that McCain actually said he would keep troops in Iraq, in the context of the ongoing U.S. military presence in South Korea, Germany, Japan, Kuwait, etc. Also, in numerous campaign speeches Obama has ignited his anti-war base by calling for the immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Now he mentions keeping a “striking force” in Iraq. Not essentially different from what McCain has been calling for!
The Democrats told us during the 2004 presidential election we were on the verge of a recession/depression because of outsourcing jobs overseas, only to have a soaring economy for several years, along with very low unemployment. Democrats are now painting as bleak an economic picture as they can, with the usual presidential election year hype. Even the liberal Associated Press reports, “… most analysts believe a (economic) downturn will be mild and short-lived,” (April 2, Herald/Review). It was unrealistic to expect the housing industry to maintain record home prices as it did in 2005 and 2006. Those unfortunate people who chose to gamble with high risk variable mortgage rates paid little attention to the universal warning — Caveat emptor: Let the buyer beware! If we are in a recession, as some analysts believe, let’s remember that recessions are cyclical, especially following an over-heated economy, as happened with the unreal housing spree. The good news is most analysts believe this economic downturn is mild and short-lived. Democrats should be building up consumer confidence and not tearing it down.
I read the Herald/Review every day and the On Your Mind section because it never ceases to amaze me the ignorance of people. This week what really blew my mind was the girl with the baby. She went to a furniture store that has policies for a reason. Contrary to what a lot of people believe, bottles, sippy cups and everything else that can hold liquid can spill. I know. I have kids. Even water will stain, and formula will stain, as well as smells bad. If she wants to breast-feed in public, more power to her. I can understand not wanting that around new furniture. So, good for her, good for her family and good for her friends if they never shop at that store again because I guess it is true “ignorance is bliss.” Finally, kudos for the store for having policies and sticking to them.
Richard Widmark who was a well-known Hollywood actor died this week. I haven’t read anything in the newspaper. Was it missed?
Editor’s note: Richard Widmark died on March 24. Looking back at editions after that day, we did not run a notice on his death.
To the woman’s comment recently about her indignation about being asked not to take baby formula into the furniture store: You and the baby are exactly who this message was meant for the most. Who is more likely to spill something than a child or baby with formula? I, for one, don’t want to see spilled milk or anything else spilled on furniture or items I’m interested in purchasing. It’s just plain wrong.
Every store should have the right to forbid food and drink entering, period. So, feed your kid before you go or leave it at home. It doesn’t bother me one bit to follow some rules. It makes me glad the store takes some pride in their store and products, so their customers can enjoy a clean environment.
