I would like to respond to the person who, on March 17 asked why Fort Huachuca had its own schools, homes, shopping centers, etc. Every large military base, Navy, Marine, and Army has its own schools so the children living at those bases are assured of the highest quality education available. They have homes for as many of their base personnel as possible so that some military families, at least, are not subject to gouging civilian landlords. They have their own huge retail stores so that military families can buy the best goods at reasonable prices, tax free. They have their own full service stations where oil, gas, tires, batteries, etc., can be purchased at reasonably cost. They have movie theaters, bowling alleys, furniture stores, post offices, sports centers, hospitals. As for your justification for all of these things, how many times have you faced an armed enemy of our country? Yes, the military is a community within your community. But it is nothing like yours and can never be for the people living in those communities have absolutely nothing in common with your safe, secure, warm fuzzy lifestyle where your wife and children have never had to be concerned about whether you returned from killing bad guys.

A number of OYM contributors claim that the Winterhaven dissension is limited to a few people. These contributors are completely wrong. A recent Winterhaven board recall election showed that roughly 200 people are unhappy with the board, roughly 200 people are satisfied with the board, and roughly 200 people don’t care. 200 unhappy residents is hardly a small number of dissenters. They are unhappy because the board ignores their wishes, and because the board does not comply with the CC&Rs and bylaws.
I just wanted to say thank you to the Bisbee fire chief, to all the firefighters and to all the firefighters that came from other places — you guys are great. Especially the Bisbee fire chief, your direction was wonderful. Thank you for saving all of us, thank you.
Your sports editor, Matt Hickman, had column recently which the headline, to paraphrase said something like “Lute Olson lied and I respect him the more for it.” I expected to see some rationale for that statement, and I failed to find it. During his writing, he mentions that kids these days don’t respect people who tell the truth and they don’t see anything wrong with telling a lie. And it’s attitudes like Mr. Hickman’s that encourage that behavior. I think Olson is a great basketball coach, but he needs to tell the truth. He’s the highest paid state employee we have. He needs to tell the truth and don’t give me that stuff about his salary comes out of the sports budget. For every dollar he’s paid from the sports budget another dollar is lost to the university system. The man is overpaid. He was paid not to be there, and he lied about why he wasn’t there. He deserves some tough questions. He has a right to a personal life, but he needs to be truthful in every press release he makes about that. He can decide not to make press releases, too.
I don’t think that Mr. (Roger) Barnett has a chance of getting a fair trail at all. It sounds like he has a very prejudicial judge who’s going to hear his case. The judge is all for the illegal immigrants who come into this country; he’s all for the Mexicans. I don’t think that Barnett will have any chance at all of being able to explain his actions — why he did this or why he did that. Whatever happened to the constitutional saying that we have a right to defend our property? This judge is biased against Barnett, so I don’t think he’s going to get a chance.
I am so disgusted with our judges going against the American people in favor of the illegals. They are breaking our law coming here and have more rights than we do. They have told the illegals to cross the border and the Border Patrol cannot protect themselves with two agents in jail and with this agent, (Nicholas) Corbett. They can beat up an agent and the agent had better not protect himself or he will be in jail. What are they trying to do with the Barnetts? Telling the illegals do as you please in the U.S. and get paid for it. We need new judges, ones that are fair.
Dick Cheney the other day in an interview by one of the newscasters made a comment that the military people are all volunteers, knew the hazards and they’re off fighting and getting killed taking care of the rest of us. He just shook his head in his “so what” attitude. George Bush the other day said the thousands who are killed and hurt will not have died in vain. The truth is they have all died in vain, from the very first one. They’re fighting George Bush’s private war. Newscasters are always saying they died fighting for our country. They didn’t die defending our country, they died fighting Bush’s private war and that’s a double sin. If there were ever high crimes and misdemeanors he’s the one that did the most of it.

Two of my friends and I went to a Chinese buffet in SV. Nice place. Unfortunately, there were people there with uncontrolled small children. Lots of them, and they were all running circles around their parents and running wild in the restaurant. Many were literally playing in the food with their bare hands. The parents all seemed oblivious to their wild animals stampeding the place.

Oh, but John Hagee is a racist and an idiot. Hagee makes Jeremiah Wright look like Richard Simmons. Hagee has called the Catholic Church the “great whore,” an “apostate church,” the “anti-Christ,” and a “false cult system.” Not to mention what he has said about the Jews. Hagee promotes the “rapture” nonsense (not even a biblical word), which is a serious distortion of scripture. He wants to attack Iran forthwith to hasten the end of the world, as though he knows better how to affect the end times than the Almighty. He promotes the annihilation of the Muslim world. The fact is, he is a fundamental extremist and is just as violent and dangerous as any Muslim fundamentalist extremist. Find an enemy, scapegoat them and exterminate them is the fundamentalist philosophy. Kill those whom you demonize and hate. Where’s the “love your enemies and do good to those who persecute you” in that? Hagee’s one claim to fame is his false prophecies. Almost never does he predict the future correctly. Go ahead believe his baloney. But beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. You will know them by their fruits. And McCain is thankful for his endorsement.
Before you think about voting Democrat this year think about the immigration bill that Nancy Pelosi and Ted Kennedy are proposing, which includes the following: 1) Legal status for illegals after 24 hours even without a complete background check. 2) Taxpayers pay for lawyers for illegal immigrants. 3) Permanent temporary visas. 4) Amnesty for Illegals who are gang members. 5) U.S. taxpayer dollars to go to Mexico to pay for benefits of citizens living there. 6) No back taxes charged for Illegals. 7) Fast track for security and prosperity partnership basically erasing borders separating North American countries. 8) Border security not first. 9) Tuition for illegals. 10) In the citizenship process, illegals get to cut in front of other Mexicans who have been waiting for years to legally migrate to our country legally. This information comes not from Fox but from CNN, the Democrats most trusted source for news.
A lot of people depend on their small town newspaper for information. If someone calls the number of the cab services you list from the phone book, they will get a ‘number disconnected message. Do the homework, check it out for yourself. These companies are gone. There is one company with 24/7 cab service here, they are not listed in the yellow pages. Call 459-7778, Transportation Express, in the white pages. I used them last Friday.
My 7-year-old granddaughter goes to a local elementary school here in Sierra Vista. She is in the second grade, and since she has started this school, she has been harassed sexually by male students I would guess of the same age. One boy told her that he wanted to have sex with her. She has reported it to her teacher and her mother has gone to the school to speak with someone there and nothing is being done about it. Now my granddaughter is telling me that a boy touched her in her private part and she told me not to tell because I believe that she is afraid of her reputation or someone told her to keep quiet. I am concerned and thought about talking with the principal but like I said her mother spoke to the school and she made me think that the school can not do anything about the problem. What should we do to keep my granddaughter from feeling like this might be OK?
EDITOR’S NOTE: Our suggestion, personally contact the principal with your concerns. The next step would be to call the police if you believe something needs to be investigated. Sierra Vista police can be reached at 452-7500.
It’s sad yet funny to hear how quickly people blame religion for the ills of this world and would like to get rid of it. They point out all the wars and want to attribute them to every single religion, yet they conveniently forget the major role religion has played in helping the poor and feeding the hungry. Politics itself has caused more wars and strife than religion has. I can assure you that this world would be a far worse place without God and our faith in Him. It’s also interesting how those who argue against religion in society deliberately forget Joseph Stalin’s heartless slaughter of millions of people in his quest for a godless society.
With all the crime going on in our county, I cannot see why our D.A. doesn’t quit picking on our Border Patrol people for just doing their jobs. Also, regarding the Barnett case, since when do illegal aliens inside our borders have civil rights? Seems to me they shouldn’t have any rights, other than the right of immediate deportation.
You know, let’s get off the political party bashing. There are good Democrats and bad Democrats, good Republicans and bad Republicans. Let’s all just think about it and quit being so one-sided. There are a lot bigger issues to deal with than who’s tied to who.
There are hundreds of thousands of Canadians who cross into this country every year illegally, work here illegally, use our social system illegally. Where’s the Border Patrol on the northern border? No difference than the southern border, except they look more like white people.
Yes, the Parks and Leisure Services should hang their heads in shame. I spent a very enjoyable evening Saturday watching and listening to the youth talent show. There were four in each age category, and they gave out awards one through three and left that single child without even a certificate of appreciation. Now, that’s not right to do to a child, particularly when you know ahead of time that there are only going to be four contestants. They should have at least given a certification of appreciation. I went with some friends and their child placed, so I’m not being vindictive. I’m just saying the Parks and Leisure Services should hang their heads in shame for treating children that way.
Just reading about (Roger) Barnett’s plight in today’s March 31 edition. Looks like any illegal ever crossing Barnett’s ranch has a potential lawsuit against Barnett and their back pocket. It also appears the Mexican American Legal Defense Fund is encouraging such lawsuits. How about doing a report on this fund? What is their charter? How are they funded? I’m not sure I like the idea of an organization that gets most of its funding in the U.S. supporting plaintiffs that are illegals in their suits against the U.S. citizen.
I think for anyone to be saying Hillary Clinton should get out of the presidential race is un-American and undemocratic. No candidate has the exclusive right to be president. This is America; we do not live in a dictatorship, so it is up to the people to make the decision who our president is going to be.
I am sick and tired of seeing Muslims, whether it is in Indonesia, Holland or around the world, going berserk, killing, destroying and just tearing up everything imaginable around the world and in cities that have taken them in as refugees when they were in dire situations. It’s like they are almost subhuman and when they even just hear the word “Mohammed” they go even insane. It’s about time the world start standing up to these lunatics, and especially the news media, who’s afraid to mention their name or type out the name Mohammed. I believe it is about time this country has the audacity to stand up to what is taking place in the world, and against Muslims and their insanity. They want to desecrate anything that’s Jesus related or Christianity or anything that has to do with the Jewish state, or the Jewish community. They want to destroy, kill and just come around and feel that it is OK for them to do anything they want to do against other religions. But if you just mention “Mohammed” even out of the history book, like I say, they go totally berserk.
APRIL 1
The April Fools’ Joke of the decade is on the Herald’s April 1st 2008 Water Conservation insert, listing Life Care Center of Sierra Vista as a recipient of USPP Grant Awards for saving water. A pathetic joke too sad to be funny. What that place does to save water is spray mega-gallons daily for years onto three sidewalks, two streets, two adjacent driveways, and the gutters leading to the sewer in front of Sierra Toyota on Fry Boulevard. Even during heavy rains, the water flows over useless shrubs and an expensive manicured lawn while washing gutter trash into the city’s sewer system. Remember when the entire Moorman/ Fry intersection had to be reconstructed because of all that Life Care water causing a sink-hole big enough to swallow Luciano Pavarotti? The main post office entry/exit was blocked off for weeks. I just wish the grant money would be used to hire qualified trained compassionate patient-care help — not to clean concrete, blacktop, streets and a pretty yard.
I guess we have no choice, no one in their right mind would vote for a person named Hussein or a woman whose husband was impeached. So McCain is the only choice.
Barack Obama’s and Hillary Clinton’s pledge to raise the taxes of only Americans who earn more than $250,000 — to pay for their universal health care, billions for education, college for everyone, mortgage bailouts, etc. — is nothing more than a redistribution of wealth, a throwback to Karl Marx. When I remember Hillary’s 1969 Wellesley College thesis eulogizing the principles of Marxist radical community organizer, Saul Alinsky, I’m not surprised. When I think of Obama abrogating sound judgment and sitting in a church pew for 20 years, listening to the same pastor spewing his racial venom and hatred of America, I’m not surprised. I thought Marxism left us with the demise of the old Soviet Union, but it seems to be making a comeback under the pseudonym, Progressivism. I think I’ll take John McCain as my next President of the United States because I know him to be an honorable American and believer in true American values.
Those who question global warming are completely ignorant of the relevant science which is real, not taken from a Michael Crichton novel. The warmest 21 years in recorded human history have occurred in the last 25 years. Arctic sea ice is melting at record rates; within the next 10 years there will be no sea ice in summer. The glaciers are disappearing. Soon, Glacier National Park will have no glaciers. We are already seeing that as land ice melts ocean levels rise. Climate change does not say everywhere will warm, it says there will be very erratic weather patterns. Some places will see cooler weather in the short run, but the long-term pattern is unmistakable. The planet is warming and we, as Al Gore correctly states, are headed for disaster unless we take corrective measures immediately. If current patterns continue 70 percent of the world’s population will be displaced due to rising ocean levels. Don’t be taken in by the false claims of the energy industry or by those who oppose real science. Commit to leaving a cleaner, healthier world for our children and grandchildren.
A few months ago the city decided to change a traffic pattern at Medical Square, the street across from the hospital. Someone got the bright idea that it was all of a sudden no longer safe to make a left hand turn into the parking lot, even thought it’s been done for 30 years. What should have been done was the median should have been cut back another 10 feet. Instead they put up a “no left turn’” sign, so now people either have to go around the block or make a turn at the Theater intersection. This is much more likely to cause an accident. When you check with the city, the city council blames the engineers and the engineers blame the city council. I think it comes to rest with the city manager. I don’t see any reason for this blockage of it, it certainly wasn’t asked for of the people using it whether they should change the traffic pattern or not.
This is about the motorcycle accident that was covered Sunday morning in the Sierra Vista Herald. This accident happened Saturday afternoon. I actually witnessed this accident. I was there, I saw the whole thing. It really bothers me. It really bothers me after witnessing this accident and a man losing his life that the driver of that minivan was only cited for failure to yield. This lady should have been arrested and thrown in jail for something much worse, possibly manslaughter. The motorcyclist had no opportunity to react whatsoever. I can’t believe they only gave her failure to yield after killing someone like that. Something should be done about that.
Our government could control gas demand. Demand is the reason our gas prices are so high. Cut the demand and you cut the prices of gas. Do what we did in World War II. Some families have several vehicles, or have several children, each child with his own vehicle. These are mostly used for pleasure. They have plenty of money and don’t care if they pay $4 or $5 per gallon for gas. That’s the spoiled ones. They will not suffer. The poor who have to have a vehicle are the ones who suffer. Lawmakers say rationing is not the answer. In five or 10 years from now they’ll say we should have rationed five or 10 years ago. Mark my words, rationing is the answer. I’m not running for president. May God have mercy on us all.
I just wanted the Milloy family in Sierra Vista to know. My daughter and I watch the “Big Give” program every Sunday at 8 p.m. The Milloys’ daughter, Brandi, is part of the program. She was Miss Sierra Vista two years in a row. Brandi, we love you and pray for you, and hope you’re the winner, from your Arizona granddad and aunt. Bye and I love you.
EDITOR’S NOTE: Just a slight correction to the Miss Sierra Vista issue. She was Miss Sierra Vista in 2003 and 2005. A recipient of the title cannot compete the next year.
This country is still deeply, deeply racist, whether you want to admit it or not. This country is not ready for a black president. If we elect a black president, mark my words, one of the hate groups like the KKK, neo-Nazis, or white supremacist groups will end up assassinating him. We’re not ready for a black president. We’re probably not ready for a woman president. John McCain is the best option for president.

Trudy Berry does not deserve the negative OYM remarks and letters appearing in the Herald. The majority of employees in the Fort Huachuca Accommodation School District do not deserve the continual barrage of negativity. People must realize the negative remarks come from rumors spread by either a few former employees who were not allowed by Mrs. Berry to use funds in an inappropriate manner, or by a few present employees who are not happy with the fiscal responsibility demonstrated by Mrs. Berry. Unfortunately, those few individuals have been able to negatively influence others, and, in some cases, even persuade them to speak for them against Mrs. Berry. I am sure the majority of people associated with FHAS recognize and appreciate the new facilities and other benefits to students and staff that have been made possible during Mrs. Berry’s tenure. It would be helpful if everyone would check facts before speaking/writing, and continue to work to provide a great education for FHAS students.
