To the Editor:
There is no part of Bisbee that is more important than any other, but when the general public thinks of Bisbee, the historic district is what is on their minds. Driving along Highway 80 above that district on the night of March 20 truly showed the breadth and intensity of that fire. It was well beyond control by any one fire department. The Bisbee Fire Department quickly realized this, called for and received an amazing amount of help. One-hundred-seventy firefighters from 17 different fire-fighting agencies battled the flames, and as of Sunday evening that disastrous fire, possibly began as an illegally set trash fire, was completely contained. Not one structure was lost or any injuries were reported due to the fire.
Every fire is an unexpected emergency, but this one was well beyond that. I feel no matter how any part of the city of Bisbee budget has to be shuffled the firefighters of the Bisbee Fire Department deserve at least a healthy bonus if not a permanent raise in salary.
