Patricia A. Murphy, former resident of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died on Feb. 21, 2008, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born Feb. 26, 1933, in New York City, N.Y., to Harry and Eda (Patsy) Murphy.

She grew up in the Catskill Mountains of New York and graduated from Margaretville High School in 1950. After joining the U.S. Air Force, she served as an instructor at basic training, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, for several years. Later she was a flight attendant on C-97’s transporting military members and their families from Travis Air Force Base, Calif., to Japan. She left active duty as a staff sergeant in 1956, but was later a member of the California National Guard and the D.C. National Guard.

After leaving the Air Force, Pat joined the civil service and for many years worked for the Army in the air terminal at Travis Air Force Base in the port call office. In 1971, she moved to the headquarters of Military Traffic Management Command in Washington, D.C., where in 1974 she was the command’s Woman of the Year. In 1978, she retired for health reasons. In 1980, she and her partner, Linda K. Louden, left on an adventure in their RV traveling the United States for four years and visiting all but one of the 50 states. Falling in love with Arizona, they settled in Sierra Vista, Ariz., where they resided until 2004.

During the years in Sierra Vista, Pat did volunteer work at Ramsey Canyon Nature Conservancy, but devoted most of her volunteer hours to the Sierra Vista Hospital Auxiliary and was a past president of that organization and a life member.

Pat will be remembered by her neighbors and friends as The Bird Lady, as wherever she went she fed the birds and made a special study of hummingbirds. She will be greatly missed for her good nature and warm hospitality.

Pat is survived by her partner, Linda of Apache Junction, Ariz.; her sister, Chick Knight of Dansville, N.Y.; and many nieces and nephews.
