Buena hosting football camps

Buena High School’s football staff and players will host three Youth and Middle School Football Camps starting in April.

Camp dates are April 12, May 17 and June 21. Each camp will run from 9-11 a.m.

Cost is $30 for each camp or all three camps for $80.



Payment can be made in cash or check made payable to the Buena Football Club.

Registration for the Buena camps will be held in conjunction with the Sierra Vista American Youth Football Conference registration on April 5, 19 and 26; May 10 and 24 and June 14 and 28 at Big-5 Sporting Goods in Sierra Vista.

Cost for youth football is $75 for flag, $90 for tackle and $75 for cheerleading. All equipment is provided.

Evans coming for SVPT Opening Ceremonies

Nancy Evans, former two-time All-American pitcher who played for the University of Arizona softball team until 1998, will hold a 1 1/2-hour lesson on Saturday, April 12 after Sierra Vista Ponytail Opening Ceremonies.

The ceremonies are scheduled to begin at the Domingo Paiz Athletic Complex.

John Cooper Perimeter Trail Tour

This year the Dawn to Dust Mountain Bike Club, in conjunction with the  US Forest Service will be hosting the 10th Annual John Cooper & Perimeter Trail Tour on April 19 in Miller Canyon. 

This tour not only honors the memory of the late John Cooper, but also raises money to benefit our community by continuing the Perimeter Trail building project to fulfill its thirty mile conclusion.

Thus far, money raised from this event has assisted in the completion of the first section of the Perimeter Trail with bathrooms and parking lots at both the Carr Canyon and Miller Canyon trailheads. 

The next section to be completed will connect Carr Canyon with Ramsey Canyon, which has already been connected to Garden Canyon on Fort Huachuca.

Women’s Golf Clinics at Turquoise Valley

Running through June 28, Turquoise Valley head golf pro Scott Jessee will be holding golf clinics for women.

Ladies can do just one clinic or the whole series. Clinics will cover everything from etiquette to rules, short game and full swing. 

The cost is $25 for each clinic or $100 for all five. 

Clinics run from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. each date.

SV Soccer Club’s annual general meeting

The Sierra Vista Soccer Club will be holding its AGM on Thursday at the Fire Station on Yaqui.

Aquafina Pitch, Hit and Run on Mar. 29

Come out and show off your baseball skills and talents by competing in the 2008 Aquafina Pitch, Hit, and Run Competition conducted by the Department of Parks and Leisure Services.  

Competition will run from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Mar. 29, at Pat Arbenz Field, located in the city’s Sports Complex.

The competition includes pitching (overhand), hitting from a batting tee, and base running. The competition is free and open to girls and boys, 7-14 years of age (as of July 11, 2008).  Boys and girls compete against each other.  A copy of a participant’s birth certificate is required when registering at the Oscar Yrun Community Center, the Ethel Berger Center and at the Cove. Registration is ongoing.

Buena middle school development program

The third annual Buena basketball middle school development program begins Mar. 28 for boys in grades 6, 7 and 8.

Practices will be Friday nights at 6 p.m. and games will be played Saturday mornings beginning April 5.

Atkinson to host Golf Clinic on Mar. 28

On the day prior to Turquoise Valley’s Centennial Celebration Pro-Am golf tournament, TVGC head pro Dick Atkinson will conduct a golf clinic for all tournament participants and volunteers. Rules and tips on any phase of the game will be offered from 1:45 to 2:30 p.m. For more info, call 432-3091 or 432-5104.

San Pedro Flycasters fundraising banquet

The San Pedro Flycasters Club will hold its annual fundraising banquet on Sat. March 29, from 6 to 9:30 p.m., at the Windemere Hotel in Sierra Vista.

About 100 prizes will be auctioned or raffled, including art work, leather goods, crafts, guided fishing trips, Mata Ortiz pottery, wines and top quality fishing equipment and sporting goods.

Attendees need not be club members.

The club uses its funding to support game fish environmental preservation, the expansion of endangered fish species habitats and educational projects.

Tickets are $30 and may be purchased at the door and include a three-entrée dinner.

Hershey’s Youth Track and Field Games

The Hershey’s Youth Track and Field Games is open to boys and girls ages 9-14, and will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Saturday, April 26 at the Buena High School’s Loveless Stadium.

Events include the 50M, 100M, 200M and the 400M Dash, the 800M and 1600M Run, 4X100M Relay (form your own team-same age division), the Standing Long Jump, and Softball Throw. Registration is ongoing and all participants must provide a copy of their birth certificate. Registration is being taken at the Oscar Yrun Community Center, the Ethel Berger Center, and the Cove beginning April 2.

Competitors can enter two track events and one field event or two field events and one track event.  

This is a free program. Competition winners will advance to the State Championship Games to be scheduled in Phoenix. For information, call 458-7922. 

Cochise County Fair Horse Races

The 2008 Cochise County Fair Association Horse Races will be April 12, 13, 19 and 20 at the Cochise County Fairgrounds in Douglas.

Gates open at noon and first post is at 1 p.m.

Admission is $3 per person and El Moro de Cumpas will be the weekend of April 19-20. For information about the races, call 364-3819.
