Published/Last Modified on Sunday, Mar 02, 2008 - 06:15:50 am MST

Martha Evalyn Smitmans of Whetstone, Ariz., was called to the Lord Saturday, Feb. 22, 2008. She passed away peacefully of natural causes at Hacienda Rehabilitation Center. Martha was born in the township of Winfield, in the county of Butler, Pa., on Nov. 22,   1922, to Milton and Mary Heller.

Martha was predeceased by her daughter, Stephanie; and husband, Hagen Wolfram Smitmans.

As a military spouse, Martha traveled throughout the United States and Europe during her husband’s assignments to France and Germany.

Their final military assignment was on Fort Huachuca in 1966. They lived in the Bonnie Blink Housing area on post before their move to Whetstone, Ariz., when Hagen retired from the military. Martha worked as a civil servant in various locations on Fort Huachuca, and she retired as a transportation specialist.

A scrimshander, bead maker and jewelry designer, Martha and her husband were active in the Huachuca Mineral and Gem Club and Huachuca Art Association for many years.

Martha demonstrated and taught glass beadmaking at many mineral and gem shows, public events, and gave beading classes to small groups.

She and her husband were avid RVers, and traveled extensively throughout Arizona, New Mexico and California, participating in numerous mineral, gem and craft shows where their displays won many awards. During those years, they made many friends.

The thing people always remarked on was her      wonderful smile and hospitality.

She was well known locally for her glass millefiore beads and meticulous, delicate glass beadwork creations that took many hours of labor intensive work. She loved many pets over the years — dogs, cats and birds. She especially loved dachshunds and had about a dozen at various points in her life.

Martha thoroughly enjoyed traveling, meeting new people, potluck meals with RV friends at shows, parties, wildlife (her most common scrimshaw theme), sewing and bird watching out of her picture window at home.

Per her wishes, there will be no services. She will be privately interred with her husband, Hagen, in the Fort Huachuca Cemetery. Donations in Martha’s name may be made to the Huachuca Art Association or the employee morale fund at the Hacienda Rehabilitation and Care Center, 660 Coronado Drive, Sierra Vista AZ 85635.

Cremation and burial arrangements have been entrusted to Jensen’s Sierra Vista Mortuary.
