A gift doesn’t go unnoticed

CHEER: New animal center in Sierra Vista

Nancy Brua, the residents of Sierra Vista thank you.

On Thursday, your bequest helped to give our city a new animal care facility, aptly named the Nancy J. Brua Animal Care Center.

The grand-opening of the $4 million structure came because you gave a contribution of $1,018,000, after accrued interest.

It is because of you that our city was able to pursue and make reality a facility that upgrades the quality of life not only for the city’s residents, but also that of stray dogs, cats and other animals.

We hope your example will inspire others to make similar donations, helping us all to gain facilities that many wish for, but government money may not be available for. And we hope your story of being an Army nurse who was stationed at Fort Huachuca early in your career can tell of the impression this community can have on people.

The 12,500-square-foot facility with 55 dog and 32 cat kennels is an addition to our city that won’t be forgotten. And as it bears your name, your gift will not be forgotten, either.

CHEER: Guidelines for the West End

This week the Sierra Vista Downtown Neighborhood Commission — which may soon be called the West End Commission — heard city Principal Planner Don Brush discuss the development of architectural design guidelines for the city’s West End.

The West End has been the focus of much attention in recent years. It is where money has been invested to revitalize storefronts and buildings in the city’s older area. It’s considered the downtown area, but, in our opinion, it lacks an identity, something that makes it cohesive and unique.

Guidelines on architecture could give the West End the look and possibly the attention it needs to truly set itself apart and maybe create a business district that can revitalize beyond what it already has.

Brush said the city will be holding public meetings on the ideas for such guidelines. It’s important that West End business and property owners participate in this process.

And it seems that if the West End development codes are to be used as a basis for further architectural codes for the city, then many other property and business owners elsewhere will want to have a say.

JEER: Elections elsewhere

If you think the presidential races have been heated, look at some of the elections that are set to happen in other nations.

In Pakistan, next week’s elections, which were delayed after Benazir Bhutto’s murder, are set to take place. But President Pervez Musharraf says he won’t tolerate protests after the election, even if they are peaceful.

And despite the fact he says the elections will be “free, fair, transparent and peaceful,” there is doubt before they occur.

In Russia, the March 2 election for president seems almost not worth having. Current Russian President Vladmir Putin has selected who he believes should be his successor — Dmitry Medvedev. Putin also seems to be ready to keep an important place in the Russian government as prime minister.

Finally, Iran’s Interior Ministry has been busy banning Web sites that are said to be “poisoning” public opinion and disqualifying more than 2,000 prospective candidates for an upcoming vote, most being reformers, according to The Associated Press.

While the Iranian Guardian Council reinstated about 280 candidates on Tuesday, the complaints continue that the election isn’t fair.

No freedom of speech. No right to run without disqualification.

These make America’s election issues seem trivial at times.
