Musical sounds will enfold Buena High School this President’s Day weekend as the Southeast Regional High School Music Festival visits Sierra Vista. Honor choir, band and orchestra students from all over Southeastern Arizona will converge at Buena for this superb event. Each student attending the festival went through a rigorous audition process to make the performing groups. Only the top ranking 100 students in the region were chosen for each ensemble. The Southeastern region includes schools from Cochise and Graham counties as well as schools from Tucson, Nogales and Casa Grande. Buena High School will host this annual event which is normally placed in Tucson.
Each performing group will have all-day rehearsals on Friday and Saturday with guest clinicians in preparation for the Festival Concert which will be at the Buena Performing Arts Center on Saturday at 5 p.m. Each ensemble is conducted by first-rate conductors. The choir will be directed by Dr. J. Edmund Hughes, director of choral activities at Chandler-Gilbert Community College; the band will be conducted by Laszlo Veres, music director and conductor of the Tucson Pops Orchestra and the Arizona Symphonic Winds; and the orchestra will be conducted by Bill Bitter from Highland High School in Gilbert. These student musicians will come together in performance with a common goal: to grow in musicianship, work collectively with others, and to perform with artistic excellence.
