I succumbed to an ad by the Suarez Industries quarts infra-red heater weeks ago when the local frigid winds from all directions sent us into the teens Fahrenheit at night. Expecting the heater to be sent prepaid within two or three days, I’ve been expecting the heater daily for too long. Today, Jan. 4, a call from them in Ohio said the heater will be sent by the middle of next week. I did call and e-mail them. E-mailing brought no reply. The on-hold time was supposedly less than one minute, but after pleas to hang on, seconds apart for five minutes, a live person answered. “The problem is it takes 10 days to process a credit card approval because we have a very popular product, then another week to prepare the heater for UPS Ground.” I asked why they need 10 days when Kroger grocers with millions of customers can approve credit in 10 seconds. The woman did finally say “The heater will ship from California, not Ohio.” Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard is going to hear about misleading advertising. Then we can go the paper-trail route while the one-year warranty runs out on the heater by next January. Moral of story: Go to ACE (Hardware) and find a ceramic heater for less money, credit pre-approved and be home in half an hour in a good mood.
Now the great Iowa caucus is over and all the great Iowans have made their choices. America is about to go black majority rule and will suffer the same fate as Rhodesia, now Zimbabwe. Oh, now I’m a racist? No, just a realist. You better get out your prayer rug and learn which way Mecca is. Look at Kenya. That’s where Obama’s roots are, where his family came from. You better think it over.
I would suggest that the OYM caller with opinions on the subversiveness and ill effects of the ACLU more carefully research the ACLU’s history. It has spent more than 30 years defending the rights of both conservatives and liberals in all sorts of environments such as in schools, in courts, in the public arena, and in politics. It has sought to defend the rights given to us in the Constitution and it continues to seek to do so. It has defended ultraconservative and ultra liberal mindsets and those in the middle. Check the facts before getting quite so out of hand.

Am I the only one who’s sick and tired of the Maria Elena Salinas column? She has the nerve to suggest that her friends and relatives, the illegal aliens, are the top story of the year. That may be the top story in Mexico, but someone needs to remind her this is the USA and our country is at war with our men and women fighting and dying. She needs to be taken on a tour of the U.S. prisons in Arizona, Texas and California to see the thousands of her pals, the illegals, who are locked up for crimes ranging from theft to murder which were committed on American citizens. She blames everyone in the world for the illegal immigrant problem except her pals the illegals.
I completely concur with Dick French’s letter to the editor regarding recycling. Why is the recycling program still deemed a pilot project? It’s been over a year since we, the recyclers, have had to call every Wednesday when we have a pick up. Winterhaven has one of the highest rates of recycling, so it would seem reasonable to put a bag out on Wednesday without having to call in. If the bags must be counted, do so after they are collected.
I don’t think it’s so much the Iowans want a black man. I think they don’t want a Hillary.

The photo in Saturday’s newspaper of the downed power line is a really good shot, but that delivery truck couldn’t be above because if it crossed that power line then that line was too low. There are laws that say that line has to be at least 13 feet high so trucks can go under it. So that line must have been sagging to begin with. I hope they get it fixed so that it’s higher for those trucks to get through. Those trucks are important for all the businesses in this town.
Thank you again for the Santas in the park. And thank you Tom Hessler for his time and efforts to protect them. I do hope our city council will commission the people who were responsible for painting them and have them do more, or some toy soldiers or angels for next year. Our park is truly a credit to our city.

Stanley Crouch’s column about the movie recently out, “The Great Debaters”, starring and directed by Denzel Washington certainly underlined my thoughts that I want to see this movie very much. I really appreciated in the column how Crouch mentioned that during the ’30s and ’40s there were many movies that emphasized the glories of learning and potentials for all of us regardless of where we were from. That was a fine column indeed. Thank you.
Surely your photographer who covered the wrestling match must have taken a lot of photos. Why was the photo of the young man and his coach put in the newspaper? What an awful picture. Who OK’d that picture? That poor young man. Do you know what you have done? Have you forgotten what it’s like to be a student and know how kids are? You owe this man an apology. Fire the photographer and the person who OK’d the picture. It was terrible.
If any of you out there are even remotely honest (and that is a bit of a stretch, isn’t it) and have been doing your homework all these years — you would testify to the heavenly host that there isn’t even one candidate who can be trusted even in a crosswalk.

The Herald’s series of articles by Bill Hess reporting from Iraq should prove conclusively to cynical readers that our troops have been and are still fighting Al Qaeda in Iraq. I hope Gabrielle Giffords is paying attention. Giffords recently voted to pull troops out of Iraq and rescinded her vote only because of President Bush’s veto which she and fellow Democrats could not override. Gen. David Petreaus’ surge is definitely working and Giffords and other anti-surge Democrats aren’t happy about this fact. The vote by Giffords and Democrat cohorts was meant to kill the surge. A sadistic vote! It exposed Giffords and fellow Democrats as hypocrites when they say they support our troops in Iraq. My question is this. Why did Giffords vote for a troop pull-out in Iraq if our troops are fighting al Qaeda there? Aren’t we at war with al Qaeda? This shows me that Giffords is soft on the global war on terror. Yes, she votes for veterans’ benefits (always bipartisan slam dunks) but then votes to kill the surge in Iraq. That’s not support for the troops in my eyes. I hardly appreciate a softie on the war on terror representing me in Congress.
Thanks to the Herald/Review for the new Relish magazine insert. Interesting and informative information and even contains a single coupon. A disappointment that they will hear about from me is that the fatty, trans-fat-filled, over-salted, cholesterol-laden and sugary items are so very prominent, while there are only 10 of the multiple advertisers without an unhealthful ingredient. Even the featured Laura Scudder product is a salted one, though they do make salt-free peanut butters. It is good business to cater to the public’s whims, but Relish presents itself as “Eating Healthy.” That would include a preponderance of veggie, fruit, nut, pure juices, raw foods and whole grain products, recipes and advertisers. Can the editors suggest such to Jim Melton at the Relish HQ? Dietitians and the Bisbee and Sierra Vista markets will be aghast at the unhealthful content of Relish magazine. But the pictures are pretty.
Every time I see the rock “West End” signs, I immediately think of the phrase referring to horse anatomy. In this case it becomes “west end of an eastbound city.” This vague geographic reference has no effect on the economic status of the area. When I was growing up we called it “downtown,” which implied the area as a business district. Even a historic reference like “Old Garden Canyon District” has more significance. To the caller who thought the rock walls were better to look at than political campaign signs, keep in mind that though better looking, they are the same: They were both put up by people wasting other people’s money, and hoping to do more of the same in the future.
I urge all Republicans to think seriously and follow their conscience and not vote for one of the Republicans out of blind loyalty or because you want more tax cuts even if those cuts mean the country goes down the drain because of them.
Congratulations to the Sierra Vista Herald, reporter Bill Hess and photographer Suzanne Cronn for your coverage from Iraq, especially including the reports of positive interaction between our soldiers and the Iraqi people.
I’m concerned there is a porn shop that sells paraphernalia in the town of Sierra Vista. It’s on Sixth Street. I’d like to see the community pull together to get the shop closed down. It is not good for our families and our children.
I’d like to make a comment about the tattered flag on the cell phone tower across the street from Burger King and Wal-Mart. It’s a shame to have the U.S. flag in such tattered shape. It looks like a war-torn flag. Take some pride in the United States and replace the flag.

I’d like to refresh the memory of the person who submitted the Jan. 7 OYM who stated, “When Bill Clinton left office our budget was balanced, in fact we had a surplus.” In the 1994 House and Senate races, the GOP gained control of both houses. The GOP Congress proposed a balanced budget and Bill Clinton vetoed it three times. Finally, the GOP Congress had enough votes to override Clinton’s veto. He saw the writing on the wall and decided the better political course was to take credit for the bill as is the case whenever a president signs a bill. Besides, Clinton was an unpopular president at the time because of Hillary’s universal medical care debacle. Clinton signed the balanced budget bill only because he had no other political course of action. The truth is that Clinton never wanted a balanced budget as his three vetoes attest. We can thank the GOP Congress for the balanced budget and the surplus. Also, Bill Clinton never had a national disaster like 9/11, two wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, a natural disaster like Katrina, and volatile global oil prices to deal with. Even with all that, the Bush administration has maintained a steady, strong, thriving economy, low unemployment and low taxes.
