FORT HUACHUCA — One of the senior commanders on this Southern Arizona Army post will be moving to a new assignment.

Maj. Gen. Carroll F. Pollett, commander of Network Enterprise Technology Command/9th Signal Command (Army), has been chosen to become the next chief of staff of the U.S. Strategic Command, based at Offut Air Force Base, Neb., according to an announcement Wednesday that was relayed from the Army Chief of Staff.

The Strategic Command — or STRATCOM — has the following mission, according its Web site: “Provide the nation with global deterrence capabilities and synchronized Department of Defense effects to combat adversary weapons of mass destruction worldwide. Enable decisive global kinetic and non-kinetic combat effects through the application and advocacy of integrated intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance; space and global strike operations; information operations; integrated missile defense and robust command and control.”

A news release issued by Eric S. Hortin, deputy public affairs officer for NETCOM, said Pollett will replace Maj. Gen. Howard Bromburg, who was selected to command the Army Air Defense Artillery Center and Fort Bliss, Texas.

A replacement for Pollett has not yet been chosen, and no report date has been established yet for Pollett’s new job.

Pollett, who was recently promoted to two stars from the rank of brigadier general, took command of NETCOM/9th Signal in September 2005 when he replaced retiring Maj. Gen. James Hylton.

A native of Georgia, Pollett enlisted in the Army and was initially commissioned in October 1976 after completing the Infantry Officer Candidate School.

Pollett  was  the  commander of the 5th Signal Command and deputy chief of staff for Communications and chief information officer for United States Army Europe.

During his Army service, the general has served in a number of positions, including some time as an enlisted soldier.  Some of the positions he held are:

• Principal director for Operations and Commander of Global Operations, Defense Information Systems Agency in Arlington, Va.

• Chief of the command, Control, Communications and Computers Division on the Joint Staff in Washington, D.C.

• Commander of the 3rd Signal Brigade at Fort Hood, Texas.

• Commander, 123rd Signal Battalion, 3rd Infantry Division, in Germany.

• Commander, Company D, 426th Signal Battalion, Fort Bragg, N.C.

He is a graduate of Georgia Southern College, where he earned a bachelor of science degree.

Pollett also has a master’s degrees in business administration from Central Michigan University and in national resource strategy from the National Defense University.

During his service career he has attended the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced courses, Telephone Digital Officer’s Course, Joint Telecommunications Course, Command and General Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces.

The general’s decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, two Legions of Merit, Bronze Star Medal,  six  Meritorious Service Medals, Army Commendation Medal, two Army Achievement Medals and the Good Conduct Medal.

He also is authorized to wear the Joint Staff Badge, Army Staff Badge and Master Parachutist              Badge.

Pollett and his wife, Dayna, have two sons.
