Retired Lt. Col. Douglas M. Hylton, died on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, followed 24 hours later on Nov. 12, by his beloved wife, Margaret, in Chandler, Ariz.

Doug, 87, passed away peacefully in his sleep, while Margaret, 86, was in hospice following a stroke. Their three children, daughter-in-law and three granddaughters were all assembled in Phoenix, Ariz.

Doug and Margaret met in 1939 while students at Pikeville College, Pikeville, Ky.

Doug joined the Army in 1941, was commissioned on Jan. 26, 1942, and fought in the Pacific Theater as a platoon leader in Company E, 130th Infantry, 33rd Infantry Division.

Margaret completed her bachelor’s in music education from West Virginia University in 1943, and they married after Doug returned from the war in January 1946. Jan. 26 would have been their 62nd wedding anniversary.

Shortly after receiving his master’s degree in international relations from the University of Kentucky in 1952, Doug was recalled to active duty. In 1967, after assignments in Japan, Texas, Bangkok, and Baltimore, Doug retired from active duty.

He worked for the Intelligence Center and School, Fort Holabird, Md., until 1971 when it was moved to Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

Margaret’s musical career continued throughout Doug’s military career, as choir director at Overlea High School, and various church choirs in Maryland.

Doug retired from the U.S. Civil Service in 1991, while Margaret involved herself in the cultural life of Fort Huachuca and Sierra Vista working with the musical group she founded, the “Meistersingers.” She was also choir director for the Methodist Church, and the Fort Huachuca Post Chapel, as well as giving private voice lessons in Sierra Vista. Several of her students received vocal/music scholarships.

Doug and Margaret moved to Chandler, Ariz., in 1997 to be near their son Phillip. There they both attended Sun Lakes Methodist Church, where Margaret participated in the choir, and organized “The Living Last Supper.”

Margaret continued teaching private voice lessons until her first stroke in 2003. She learned to play piano again after this stroke, and enjoyed entertaining friends and family.

Doug and Margaret are survived by their son, Phillip, and his wife, Theresa; two daughters, Renee and her husband, Francis Thomas, Missy and her husband, Larry Rickard; granddaughters, Maggie Greene, Kate and Elizabeth Hylton; step-grandchild, Rebecca Bainter (Brian); their daughters, Emmerson and Avery and Melissa Wong (Tommy) and their son, Remington; and 12 nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Banner El Dorado Hospice for their care and support.

Funeral will be Friday, Jan. 25, 2008 beginning at 11:30 a.m. at the Main Post Chapel, 2383 Smith Ave., Fort Huachuca, Ariz.

Interment will be at 1 p.m.

Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association.

" What a beautiful story these two have shared with the world through the short descriptive of their fairytale-like lives! Very inspirational to say the least. This man and this woman sound like a wonderful example of picture perfect humanity! Great write up! "

" I met Col Hylton in spring of 1994, just in passing. I was attending the ANCOC course at Fort Huachuca. He made a strong impression on this soldier, giving me some sound advice at a time when I really needed it. My sister-in-law, Heather Hinshaw, took voice lessons from Mrs. Hylton. My condolences to their family. And a salute to you, Sir. "
