LAS CRUCES — The Buena Colt wrestling team, competing in one of the largest tournaments in the Great Southwest, finished sixth in the 48-team field at the Las Cruces Invitational Saturday.

The tournament was won by Rio Rancho of Albuquerque with 215.5 points. Belen (Texas) was second with 206.5 points and  Silver City (NM) placed third with 157 points. Albuquerque (NM) was fourth with 140 points, Los Lunas (Texas) placed fifth with 133 points and Buena was sixth with 131.5 points.

“We had two great days of wrestling,” Buena coach Dan Southard said. “Last year we were 13th out of 40 teams in this tournament. We wanted to finish in the top 10 this year and did just that.”  Buena sent seven of its 14 wrestlers to the finals with 119-pound Rene Miramontes finishing the highest for the Colts with a second-place finish, losing by a fall in the third period in the championship finals for first and second place.

Marcus Williams (112) and Emilio Gonzales (152) placed fourth. Both wrestlers finished with 6-2 records.

Earning fifth place medals were Brent Madden at 125 pounds and Kevin Trefts at 189 pounds. Both wrestlers finished the tournament with 5-2 records. Anthony Kirkpatrick and Robert Ellis placed sixth and also finished with 5-2 records.

“I was real proud of our two heavyweights, Kirkpatrick and Ellis,” Southard said. “They did a heck of a job against some very good wrestlers and winning six of eight bouts each was a great effort.”

Other Colt wrestlers who picked up points and who made it into Saturday’s competition before being eliminated included Ian Beauregard (130) who went 4-2, Ben Serpa (135), 3-2; Jimmy Byrd (140), 4-2 and Ryan Hegedus (145), 3-2.

Picking up a pair of victories before dropping their second match and being eliminated were Carl Larimer at 160 pounds and Brian Seiler at 171 pounds. Kyle Rae (103) lost his first two matches and was eliminated early in the competition.

Buena was the lone team from Arizona in the competition that had three state champion teams from New Mexico and Texas.

Buena will travel to Tucson Wednesday for a dual meet with Sabino and will compete in the Douglas Invitational next weekend.

" Kevin, It is probably an issue of your source, but Belen and Los Lunas High Schools are both in New Mexico, South of Albuquerque, not in Texas. "
