LAS CRUCES — The Buena Colt wrestling team, winning 30 bouts and losing only seven through the first three rounds, found themselves in third place in the 48-team field at the Las Cruces Invitational Friday evening.
“We got off to a late start and will be wrestling until late tonight (Friday) Buena coach Dan Southard said. “We are a good two hours behind schedule.”
Buena still had all 14 of their wrestlers in the tournament, seven of them were undefeated with 3-0 records heading into the late evening session.
Still in the championship hunt were Marcus Williams (112), Rene Miramontes (119), Brett Madden (125), Ian Beauregard (130), Emilio Gonzales (152), Kevin Treftz (189) and Robert Ellis (Hwt.).

Those with 2-1 records were Jimmy Byrd (140), Carl Larimer (160), Brian Seiler (171) and Anthony Kirkpatrick (215).
Ben Serpa (135) was 1-1 and Kyle Rae (103) and Ryan Hegedus (145) were 0-1.
“We are wrestling well, even those bouts we lost we wrestled well in and lost to some very good wrestlers,” Southard said.
The tournament is a double elimination tournament.
Rio Rancho from Albuquerque was in first place with Silver City in second and Buena in third. Last year in this tournament, Buena was in ninth place after the first day and finished 13th in the 40-team field.
Competition continues all day today with the finals slated for tonight.
