HUACHUCA CITY — As the town approaches its 50th anniversary, the council is preparing to adopt an official flag.

Though a flag design has not been finalized, Mayor George Nerhan said he hopes to have the flags ordered by the end of the year to commemorate the upcoming anniversary.

Conceptual drawings for the flag include sun rays, mountains and a field. The flag’s final design will be a consensus of the council members ideas, Nerhan said at Thursday’s Town Council meeting.

The Town Council also chose a contractor to build a fence around most of the Camp Naco site in Naco, Ariz.

The council approved a contract with Stan’s Fence Co., who submitted the lowest bid at $32,376. About 2,200 feet of fencing will enclose Camp Naco at the northeast corner of Willson Road and Newell Street. A smaller parcel of the property south of Newell Street will be fenced at a later date.

Stan’s Fence recently completed the fence outside of the Huachuca City landfill as well.

About 55 percent of the fence will be financed with grant money from the Arizona Heritage Preservation Fund for the Camp Naco preservation project, said Town Clerk Ron Armstrong. The town will cover the balance.

Stan’s Fence Co. recently completed a fence around part of the Huachuca City landfill to prevent materials from being blown out of the landfill by the wind, Armstrong said.

The council unanimously approved allowing the Cochise Cavaliers semi-professional football team to use the Keeline Field for practices.

Nerhan said field maintenance problems in the past concerned him, and he raised the idea of charging outside groups a fee to help offset maintenance costs.

The council decided instead to ask the team for an agreement to maintain the field’s condition.

In other Huachuca City Town Council business:

• Jackie Anderson was appointed to the town Parks and Recreation Commission.

• The council approved a resolution to support the National League of Cities’ stand against violence viewed and heard by children on television, in movies and other media.

The council’s next meeting will be Dec. 13, as the next regular meeting date would have fallen on Thanksgiving Day.

" Thank you for the vote to let the Cochise County Cavaliers to continue practicing at Keeline. The Cavaliers is a family oriented team, which allows the young men/ and older men to continue to play football. The team has already sent 2 young men to college to continue their education as well as play football. Having a Semi-Professional Football team practicing in Huachuca City is a good idea. Also it would be a good for residence to come out and watch these men practice. I heard this team has been here for at least 5 yrs. "
