TEMPO: Tang:‘From the Fire Tower’ new exhibit

Published/Last Modified on Friday, Nov 02, 2007 - 04:00:46 pm MST

Outstanding Bisbee artist Jan Searle brings her most recent work from her summer in a fire tower in the Chiricahua Mountains of the Coronado National Forest. Strong and colorful pastels of dense forest scenes, trees struck by lightning and glowing sunsets dominate her summer’s work. She also has done oil paintings based on some of her drawings and has embarked on some new, figurative works which are fine examples of her many faceted talents. Her intensely colored and beautifully composed work will open at the Tang Gallery, 32 Main St., in Bisbee on Saturday and will remain until Dec. 6. Searle arrived in Bisbee four years ago from Massachusetts. She loves the light and freedom of Arizona, and her paintings glow with color. The artist has a distinguished resume of work in Boston, including one woman shows at the Eclipse Gallery in Boston, the McQuade Gallery at Merrimac College in North Andover, the Bromfield Gallery in Boston and the Chase Manhattan Bank in St. John’s, U.S. Virgin Islands.

Until she arrived in Bisbee, she was employed as the gallery director at the Firehouse Center for the Arts in Newburyport. She now lives and works in Bisbee and is represented by the Tang Gallery. Her entry for the Bisbee Garden Tour last year won first place and was used in the poster for the tour. She has also won prizes in the Plein Air painting competitions in Bisbee.

Searle received her training at the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, where she earned her bachelor of fine arts degree and studied privately with Vern Broe in Richmond, Maine. In 2002 she won the Best of Show award for her oil painting “Red Noon” in the Newburyport Art Association Members Juried Competition. She also won the Best of Show award for oils and pastels at the Beacon Hill Art Walk in Boston.

The Tang Gallery, 32 Main St., in Bisbee, is open Thursdays through Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
